Today, nonprofit organization Voices Against Brain Cancer (VABC) releases a statement following reports of a young man?s battle with brain cancer and his efforts to give back to the hospital where he was treated.
According to a recent article by Joe Hadsall of The Joplin Globe, seventeen-year-old Cooper Vocelka ?appreciates the good days when they happen.? The teenager is currently suffering from a brain tumor and, according to his parents, ?surgeons have done the maximum amount of treatment and surgery they can do.?
The article reports, ?Despite the grim reality of a terminal diagnosis, [Cooper] has plans. He will attend college at Crowder College through the A+ Schools Program and eventually enter into youth ministry.? Hadsall also reports that in the coming weeks, the people of Carl Junction will see Cooper playing the guitar. ?Cooper will play around town, wherever he can find a seat, and leave his case open. Any tips he collects will be donated to a fundraising effort to buy Christmas gifts for patients in the oncology ward at Children?s Mercy Hospital, the same place where he received his treatments.?
VABC representative, Clay Darrohn, states, ?Cooper Vocelka?s story is one of inspiration, generosity and kindness. Despite his own diagnosis, his current focus on not only living his own life to the fullest extent possible, but also his desire to give back to the young cancer patients at the children?s hospital that treated him is nothing short of admirable. We hope that his story will inspire those who have been affected by brain cancer, and that those who will hear about Cooper?s endeavors will aspire to do more to make a difference as we find ways to combat this disease.?
