10 Best Buys In 2013 Motorcycles

Price: $4799

Few bikes surprised us more than the old Kawasaki Ninja 250R. Here was a tiny bike that wasn't just a bargain machine, but also a blast to ride with sport-bike DNA you could feel. As good as the 250 was, though, with this newest entry Kawasaki decided to keep a stranglehold on making the most raucous entry-level sport bike.

The new Kawasaki Ninja 300 replaces last year's 250R. It may have lost the "R," but it's no less enjoyable to ride. Where the old bike still used a carb, the engine has now been given fuel injection. Kawasaki also updated the chassis and fitted the 300 with a slipper clutch and optional ABS. But what's really tantalizing about this bike is the engine's 13,000 redline and feathery 379-pound curb weight. Yes, this little ripper is more expensive than the old model, but it's still a great deal.

Baldwin, wife relay Sandy ordeal: Closet leak!

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria Thomas, residents of Manhattan's East Village neighborhood, rode out Hurricane Sandy in their apartment, and documented the experience on video. How did the couple manage to make it through the storm? Well, not without a few hardships. Such as having to move Thomas' gowns out of her leaking closet and to a drier location.

"We already have a leak. Of course, in my closet. I have to take out all my red carpet dresses, because of the leak," Thomas said as Baldwin took video of said dresses, draped sadly over a bedside in the wake of early-storm dampness.

Thomas then bravely steps out on her balcony, scanning potted plants that have been toppled over ("Maybe that's where my leak is from?" she speculates) before going back inside, where she later becomes a little stir crazy. Which means "It's yoga time," according to Thomas.

By 5:45 AM Tuesday morning, with the power out, the couple are left to watch a movie on their laptop, with what little battery remains. Their film of choice: "Mirage," with Gregory Peck. Why? Ever the director,? Baldwin feed Thomas her line, "So while we're in a blackout, we're watching a movie with a blackout."

By Wednesday, Baldwin's foray into film making seemed to be over. The actor was back to tweeting politically driven things about the election, saying, "I suppose, at this point, the critical mass has been reached re a need 4 action on climate change."

HBT: Melky bust makes Giants' title illegitimate?

This column from Ray McNulty of the T.C. Palm in Florida is so chock full o? stupid that it defies block quoting. But know that Mr. McNulty believes the following:

  • The Giants are not deserving of World Series congratulations because Melky Cabrera tested positive for PEDs, and that justifies us questioning ?the legitimacy? of the championship;
  • ?His season was a fraud. He cheated.?That?s shameful,? and ?the Giants ? knowingly or unknowingly ? reaped the rewards of his cheating.? He adds: ?That?s not right. It?s not fair.?
  • The Giants probably did know he was cheating or else they wouldn?t have traded for Hunter Pence in July;
  • This is even worse since it?s the Giants, because Barry Bonds played for them and several Giants players were mentioned in the Mitchell Report. Five years ago.
  • Bud Selig should act in the best interests of baseball and disqualify teams from playoff consideration if they have PED users on the team.

Because that?s workable.

Look, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you?re going to seriously question the legitimacy of the Giants championship, you need to account for the fact that the Giants were up by one game in the standings on the day Cabrera was suspended yet somehow ended up winning the division by eight games.

Wait, let me guess: once their criminal conspiracy was finally uncovered all of the stress of their deceit ended, thereby allowing them to loosen up and play better?

Wall Street back in business after storm shutdown

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange will open on Wednesday ? because it had to open.

In a bit of welcome news for fund managers, investors and even the economy, the company that operates the iconic exchange at 11 Wall Street announced it would not extend its trading shutdown to a third day.

Wall Street experts had feared that another delay because of Hurricane Sandy would have meant a dangerous back-up of customer orders to buy and sell stock. It also could have dealt a blow to the image of U.S. markets, already damaged by investor distrust, sudden market swings and a series of trading glitches, including the botched IPO of Facebook.

"The world is used to seeing the financial markets through the lens of the floor of New York Stock Exchange," said Larry Leibowtiz, chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, which operates the exchange. "It gives them a sense of comfort."

The New York Stock Exchange said its building and trading floor are fully operational and that normal trading will resume Wednesday at the usual starting time of 9:30 a.m. Since power is out in much of downtown Manhattan, the company said it will run the exchange using its own backup generators, a first.

The closing on Tuesday marked the first time since 1888 that the NYSE halted trading for two consecutive days because of weather. As the NYSE staff scrambled Tuesday to make sure that that 124-year record wouldn't be surpassed by another day of delay, there were reports on the Internet that the exchange floor had flooded.

It was a false alarm.

The exchange also said that a key data center in New Jersey housing computers used to trade stocks was in good condition after the storm and would be fully up and running Wednesday.

Mark Travis, president of Intrepid Capital Funds in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., said he was worried that the longer markets remained closed, the greater the backlog of pending trades that would need to be cleared when normal trading resumed.

"You build up pressure when you keep people out of the markets," Travis said. "Trading volume that may normally happen in a two-day period could get compressed into an hour or two when markets reopen."

Add to that Hurricane Sandy's timing, which was awful for the exchange. Instead of arriving on a weekend when the exchange is closed, it blasted into Manhattan on a Monday, and the start of a crucial week, too.

This week is the last full one before the presidential election. What's more, the government publishes a key report Friday that traders like to bet ahead of ? October's unemployment figures.

Another wrinkle: Wednesday is the last day of the month, which is when traders and fund managers look to stock markets for final prices to value holdings for reports they're required to send to investors and regulators.

"They need to have current prices for their holdings," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments in Chicago. "It's a positive that they are reopening the market."

Jim Paulsen, chief strategist at Wells Capital Management, agreed, but for a different reason ? the economy.

"It's not just about trading; it's about confidence," Paulsen said. "We're watching these horrific images of the storm, and people are thinking whether they should go ahead with that big purchase they were thinking about. It doesn't do any good to have another day with headlines saying the U.S can't figure out how to open its stock exchange."

The exchange spent much of Tuesday testing its trading systems using its all-electronic Arca system. But Leibowitz, the chief operating officer, said there would be enough traders and market makers on the floor of the exchange tomorrow ? 100 or so, he estimated. He said many are staying in nearby hotels.

The exchange also tested to see whether fuel trucks could get to the exchange despite flooded highways, tunnels and bridges. Leibowitz said the trucks were able to arrive, and the exchange took the opportunity to top off the tanks for the backup generators. The exchange can operate for 40 hours on backup generators before refueling.

"It's not like your car," he said. "You don't wait until fuel light goes on."

Thomas Caldwell, chairman of Caldwell Securities, said he was concerned there would be a big news event that would change investors' opinions about stocks during the shutdown. That could have led to a flood of orders to buy or sell stock when the market reopened. Luckily, that didn't happen.

"Europe is still Europe, Japan is still Japan," he said.

In addition to the halted trading, dozens of companies postponed earnings reports this week because of the storm.

In Europe, though, business went on as usual Tuesday. Stock markets rose broadly after falling the day before. Trading was subdued in the wake of the storm. Britain's FTSE 100 index rose 0.9 percent, Germany's DAX rose 1.1 percent and the CAC-40 in France was 1.5 percent higher.

Crude oil rose 14 cents to settle at $85.68 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

U.S. bond trading was closed Tuesday. It will resume Wednesday.

Small Players Seek Alternative to the Expense of Pay-Per-Click ...

In recent decades, we?ve witnessed a rapid pace of technological developments, one of which is a wide use of internet and the online markets. Many of people?s dream working places, such as Google and Facebook, are the titans of the digital world. Possessing millions of users, meaning millions of potential buyers, those companies make most of their profits by allowing the advertisements on their websites and search engines. In the class, we?ve talked about such mechanism called pay-per-click advertising. For example, if we type certain keyword into the Google search engine, related ads will appear on the side bar. The companies that placed the ads pay a certain price to Google each time a user clicks the ad. Although the mechanism might seem that it is not quite effective in attracting the potential consumers, the article tells us the case for Tom Telford?s rental management company, which saw a phenomenal results through this method of advertising. Like the article illustrates, it is quite profitable especially for the large companies such as Google and Amazon.

Yet, the price per click is very high for such large searching websites (like Google) because they have a large pool of devoted users. Therefore, it gets harder for small companies to get a slot to advertise their goods on such websites. In the article, such hardship that the small companies face is clearly illustrated: Mr. Telford had to pay more than twice per click than he paid initially as the competitions to get the slots got more competitive. Large companies capable of offering a high price per click can easily get the slots for their ads while small companies have to pay more than they can afford in order to get the ad slots. Furthermore, even though the company is paying the site every time a user clicks the ads, the interest of the user may range from misguided to merely erratic. In such case, the company is merely paying the site without any increased business.

As suggested by the referred article, small business owners can be better off by seeking alternative strategy. One alternative suggested is to create content around the keywords people are searching for. In a rapidly changing world, it is critical to stay alert and move into the direction that would yield the best result.

Kahakai Kitchen: Bread-Tomato-Garlic Soup: For Food 'n Flix: Attack ...

In about one third of the time that it will take you to watch the film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, you can make this bowl of simple, hearty Bread-Tomato-Garlic Soup. And, I do recommend that's where you spend your time--the soup not the movie.?
Elizabeth at The Law Student's Cookbook selected this campy "horror" movie as our Food 'n Flix pick for October--a very fitting choice. Although I generally like B-rated cult-status films, I just couldn't quite get into it this round. Filmed in 1978, (I vaguely remember watching it as a child), the years have not been kind to this film--I think my only real laughs came from the clothing and bad low-budget special effects. Still, seemingly harmless tomatoes intent on taking over the world did inspire this delicious dish.?
This recipe comes from the Jill Dupleix cookbook of the same name, Bread Tomato Garlic--featuring recipes with three "main player" ingredients. The three are used beautifully here in a thick, velvety soup.?
Jill Dupleix says, "A soup that's really a salad: sourdough bread, rich, ripe tomatoes and your fruitiest olive oil."

Bread-Tomato-Garlic Soup?
Adapted from Bread Tomato Garlic by Jill Dupleix
(Serves 4)

Main Players:
12 oz stale sourdough bread
1 lb ripe tomatoes
2 garlic cloves, peeled (I used 3 cloves)

Supporting Cast:
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus extra to serve
5 cups chicken stock or veggie broth
1 small bunch basil
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Remove crusts from the bread, thickly slice and cut into 3/4-inch cubes. Coarsely chop the tomatoes, and smash the garlic with the side of a knife until flattened.

Heat the olive oil and garlic in a heavy saucepan. When hot, add the tomatoes and cook, stirring for 5 minutes.

Add the broth gradually, stirring, and bring to a boil. When the mixture is bubbling, add the stale bread cubes, salt and pepper, and cook, stirring, for another 5 minutes. Toss in a handful of fresh basil leave sand stir them through.

Cover and simmer over very low heat for 20-30 minutes. Stir every now and then, squashing some of the bread into the soup with a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon.?

Remove from the heat and leave to cool for a while. Serve warm, drizzled with extra olive oil. ?

Notes/Results: So simple and good. The bread makes this soup thick and smooth. I added a little extra garlic to mine and put half of the basil in when the recipe called for it and the other half in at the end. Playing off of Dupleix comment that this is a soup that is really a salad, I topped mine with a little fresh mozzarella, making it Caprese-ish. This soup is pure comfort food and I would definitely make it again.?
Thanks to Elizabeth for picking a fun October film. She'll be rounding up the killer tomato-inspired dishes on her blog in the next few days. Have a hankering for films and food? Join us for the next Food 'n Flix pick, Julie and Julia hosted by La Cocina de Leslie.?
Now let's visit the Souper Sundays kitchen and see what dishes await.?

Foodycat has a new addiction--Nduja--rich, spicy, paste-like sausage from Calabria and used it to make this hearty Ndjua Meatball Minestrone Soup. She says, "The flavour of the pepper stuffing started me thinking of meatballs. And as the weather has turned distinctly autumnal, it led my thoughts towards soup. A big pot of minestrone, thick with stelline, beans and vegetables, with balls of 'nduja-and-sausagemeat poached gently in it. The chilli-warmth worked its way through the whole pot of broth."

Dave from Inspired by eRecipeCards joins us for the first time at Souper Sundays with two soupy bowls of goodness.? First is this Garlic Garlic Chicken and Dumplings. Dave says, "Not a typo, double Garlic. And as good as that sounds... It tasted better. ?In fact, I am out on a limb here, but I really think this is about the best thing I have ever made. ?A terrific garlic seasoned vegetable chicken soup, but on top are the most amazing garlic cheese dumplings. ?I cried just a bit when the leftovers were gone."

Next, Dave shares this Chicken, Kale, Sweet Potatoes in a Silky Butternut Squash Soup and says, "Today's soup wasn't waiting for Indian Summer, this beauty was made with a base of creamy silky butternut squash (thickened with a roux and pureed). ?The meat of the soup was cubes of fried Sweet Potatoes for texture (and health), some Kale for color. texture and even more health and some of my beloved store bought, fully cooked, fully seasoned Rotisserie Chicken..." Welcome to Souper Sundays Dave!

?
Joanne of Eats Well With Others created a fun soupy spin on a classic dish with her Lasagna Soup and says, "My grandmother didn't make lasagna. Perhaps that is why I've never felt that bad taking what should be tradition and transforming it into something totally unrecognizable.? Omitting key ingredients, adding in a rainbow of vegetables that wasn't there before, or saying "who needs an hour of baking or a tray of cheesy perfection...just throw it all on the stovetop and call it soup!" As it turns out, without a gold standard to compare it to, anything goes."
?
Janet of The Taste Space has two salads to share this week. First, this end-of-summer Flageolet Bean Salad with Roasted Tomatoes and Leeks. She says, "It is such a simple salad, but capitalizes on summer?s fresh bounty. You could even whip this one out in the middle of winter with green-house tomatoes and nobody would be the wiser. Roasting the tomatoes, leeks and garlic makes a delicious base for this salad. Coated in a touch of coconut oil, it permeates into the juicy tomatoes and silky leeks. I combined them with flageolet beans, perfect for salads with their creamy texture yet firm shape. No need for a dressing, the vegetable juices embrace the beans."?
Janet also made this pretty salad topped with Tomato-Pomegranate Vinaigrette and says, "I was initially perplexed by the recipe since it seemed to be a dressing infused with the flavours instead of being pureed directly into the dressing. So, I experimented. I made half of the recipe through the suggested (infused) method, and half of the dressing was simply pureed. The verdict? Both were good and more surprisingly to me, the blended dressing was creamier. I thought the pureed shallot and garlic would make this a scary dressing, but it wasn?t. It wasn?t as tart and acidic as the infused dressing. However, once mixed with my veggie medley, it was perfect. Both versions were nice."

Becky from veghotpot is back with a satisfying Vegan BLT (BBQ Tofu, Lettuce and Tomato) sandwich and says, "A BLT needs to be slightly smoky, slightly salty and a good contrast between crispy ?bacon?, crunchy lettuce and juicy tomatoes! ... What I liked about this sandwich was the fact that the tofu packed some great flavour but it also had a creamy subtleness which was delicious against the toasted bread. I actually left the tofu marinating for quite a while as we went to the pub and I can confirm that after a few cold pints of beer on a rainy day, this sandwich was perfect to come home to!"

Finally, Heather of girlichef made these fun Spiced Shawarma Chicken Wraps and says, "Can I just say how much I adore deceptively simple recipes? ?Deceptive in that, although fairly quick and definitely no-fuss, they are absolute crowd-pleasers. ?That would be exactly the case with the recipe... Everybody loved them exactly as-is. ?And me? ?Well, I stole away with the remaining garlic mayo all for myself. ?And a little bowl of Kalamata olives. ?Dip wrap in mayo, pop an olive in my mouth, take glorious free-will-melting bite. Repeat. ?Repeat. ?Repeat."

Wonderful dishes this week--thanks to everyone who joined in. If you have a soup, salad, or sandwich that you would like to share, just click on the Souper Sundays logo on my side bar for all of the details.

Have a happy, healthy week!

AMD promises 64-bit ARM-based Opteron server CPUs coming in 2014

AMD promises 64-bit ARM-based Opteron server CPUs coming in 2014

AMD has long stuck to x86 architecture for its server processors, but its gearing up to add 64-bit ARM-based Opteron CPUs to its arsenal in 2014. Sunnyvale also plans to reap the fruits of its SeaMicro acquisition by employing the company's "fabric" tech to link its ARM-based processors in clusters for maximizing efficiency. Where might these new processors come in handy? AMD thinks they'll fit nicely into clouds and "mega data centers" thanks to their power efficiency, but it'll let its x86-based hardware do the heavier lifting such as video encoding and rendering. Other details on the CPUs are scarce, but we suspect that'll change as 2014 approaches.

4 Ways to Fix Cloud Atlas | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi ...

****Spoiler Alert*****

My synopsis of Cloud Atlas ? A scenic three hour train ride headed nowhere. Is that to say the movie stunk? Not really. The film covers six stories that show the beautiful scenery of 1863 and imagine what our future looks like in the year 2144 and beyond. Apparently the film is about ?an act of kindness ripples across centuries to start a revolution?. Sadlyl, I missed the act of kindness and the revolution.

I checked Rotten Tomatoes to see I wasn?t alone. Cloud Atlas is floating at 61% with most reviews leaning towards the film being visually stunning but lacking substance.
Here are a few ways to fix it.

1. Shave off 45 minutes: The film follows six stories that take place in the years 1849, 1936, 1973, 2012, 2144, and 2346. That?s one too many ? 2012 could easily be cut from the film. We could?ve skipped this ripple and added more good stuff. It?s like the old Sesame Street game I grew up watching. Jim Broadbent is delightful in the vignette as Timothy Cavendish, but the story ends up feeling out of place and ruining the flow of the film. Tom Hanks? horrible accent and elderly escape plot didn?t help either.

A case could be made for 1973 getting the axe too but it had Hugh Grant as the evil an evil suit putting hits out on people. Speaking of Hugh Grant??

2. More Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant: Weaving and Grant were fantastic. Hugo Weaving does Agent Smith things playing a dirtbag brother and corporate hitman, while Hugh Grant continues to erase people?s memory of Divine Brown and that infamous Hollywood night with every great performance. Both actors were good and both felt underused.

3. Subtitles Please: As my friend Jason Roestel so kindly pointed out (paraphrasing) If you?re going to create a language and use it heavily, we need subtitles. Not having them is annoying and pretentious. When you don?t understand the dialogue makes you restless and the filmmakers aren?t able to get their point across. There are no winners in the no subtitle scenario, only losers. What made it more hilarious was language sounded like a mix of Ebonics, 70?s slang, and a little Mork from Ork. And yes, it made my ears bleed.

4. Connect the Dots: I need people to get the memo out ? not ending a movie doesn?t automatically make the film artistic (I?m looking at you Paul Thomas Anderson) and neither does leaving plot points up to audience interpretation. The plot involving the year 2346 involves Tom Hanks having visions of Papa Shango and Halle Berry trying to find a beacon to send a symbol to space. It ends with a group of cannibals attacking Hanks? village and him leaving on futuristic speedboat with Halle Berry and a bunch of people dressed like they?re headed to a Diddy party. Cut to the end of the movie and they?re on some other planet light years away. How did they get there? How are they breathing oxygen? What happened to earth? How did Sonmi-451 get the Statue of Liberty treatment? Also, how did civilization get from the cool looking 2144 to Cannibal Land in 2346? Where?s the revolution the ripples lead to? A 5 minute voice-over/flashback would have helped.

Romney cancels NH trip as storm approaches

FINDLAY, Ohio (AP) ? Mitt Romney has canceled plans to campaign in New Hampshire this week because of the storm bearing down on the East Coast.

It's the second major schedule change for the Republican presidential candidate with the election just nine days away. Romney campaigned in Ohio on Sunday instead of Virginia as planned.

He told supporters at the University of Findlay that, quote, "our thoughts and prayers are with people who will find themselves in harm's way."

President Barack Obama has also changed his campaign schedule for the coming days. The election is Nov. 6 and early voting is already underway in several states.

Romney was supposed to campaign in New Hampshire on Tuesday. He last held an event there on Sept. 7.

The campaign also canceled a Monday appearance set for Romney's wife, Ann.

How A Healthy Hair Regimen Can Save Your Life | Curly Nikki ...

It?s common in our community to downplay the effort and energy spent on our hair by saying things like ?it?s only hair? or ?just hair.? And yes, while the strands coming out of our scalp is ?just? hair, the effort put into it can be life changing. Majority of my life coaching clients are African American women with one of their areas for improvement being their physical self, starting with their hair. I?ve noticed that once my clients begin making changes in their regimen and being consistent with it, they become consistent in other areas as well.

Nutrition plans are adhered to more stringently, exercising returns into their daily life, and general feelings of enhanced well-being come about. We?ve all heard that when you look good you feel good, and this is absolutely true. Taking this a step further, when you feel good, you do good. Meaning, you do better for yourself when you?re feeling better about yourself. It?s a wonderful cycle of self improvement; starting with hair.

That said, I urge you to dust off a piece of paper and create a solid regimen for yourself. Items to include may be:

  • washing with a low or no sulfate shampoo
  • deep conditioning regularly
  • moisturizing often
  • sealing with your favorite oil
  • detangling gently
  • styling with as little manipulation as possible
In addition to the direct hair regimen items listed above you may also want to consider:
  • drinking an extra glass or two of water each day
  • doing your favorite type of exercise
  • walking more often
  • taking part in your favorite hobbies/activities
  • enjoying your family and friends
Everything is connected. And your general well being can, and often does, begin with your hair. So let?s not downplay anything by saying ?it?s only hair,? because it just may be the spark you need to improve your entire life.

Good Luck!

High-efficiency quantum dot solar cells developed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Research shows newly developed solar powered cells may soon outperform conventional photovoltaic technology. Scientists from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have demonstrated the first solar cell with external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeding 100 percent for photons with energies in the solar range. (The EQE is the percentage of photons that get converted into electrons within the device.)

The researchers will present their findings at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 -- Nov. 2, in Tampa, Fla.

While traditional semiconductors only produce one electron from each photon, nanometer-sized crystalline materials such as quantum dots avoid this restriction and are being developed as promising photovoltaic materials. An increase in the efficiency comes from quantum dots harvesting energy that would otherwise be lost as heat in conventional semiconductors. The amount of heat loss is reduced and the resulting energy is funneled into creating more electrical current.

By harnessing the power of a process called multiple exciton generation (MEG), the researchers were able to show that on average, each blue photon absorbed can generate up to 30 percent more current than conventional technology allows. MEG works by efficiently splitting and using a greater portion of the energy in the higher-energy photons. The researchers demonstrated an EQE value of 114 percent for 3.5 eV photons, proving the feasibility of this concept in a working device.

Joseph Luther, a senior scientist at NREL, believes MEG technology is the right direction. "Since current solar cell technology is still too expensive to completely compete with non-renewable energy sources, this technology employing MEG demonstrates that the way in which scientists and engineers think about converting solar photons to electricity is constantly changing," Luther said. "There may be a chance to dramatically increase the efficiency of a module, which could result in solar panels that are much cheaper than non-renewable energy sources."

Did the changing climate shrink Europe's ancient hippos?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Giant German hippopotamuses wallowing on the banks of the Elbe are not a common sight. Yet 1.8 million years ago hippos were a prominent part of European wildlife, when mega-fauna such as woolly mammoths and giant cave bears bestrode the continent. Now palaeontologists writing in Boreas, believe that the changing climate during the Pleistocene Era may have forced Europe's hippos to shrink to pygmy sizes before driving them to warmer climes.

"Species of hippo ranged across pre-historic Europe, including the giant Hippopotamus antiquus a huge animal which often weighed up to a tonne more than today's African hippos," said lead author Dr Paul Mazza from the University of Florence. "While these giants ranged across Spain, Italy and Germany, ancestors of the modern Hippo, Hippopotamus amphibius, reached as far north as the British Isles."

Hippos were a constant feature of European wildlife for 1.4 million years, during the climatically turbulent time of the Pleistocene era, which witnessed 17 glacial events. The experience of such environmental changes would not have been without cost, and Dr Mazza and co-author Dr Adele Bertini, also from Florence, investigated the impact this changing climate may have incurred.

The research focused on fossils from across Europe, ranging from the German town of Unterma?feld in Thuringia, to Castel di Guido, North of Rome, and Collecurti and Colle Lepre in Italy's Central Eastern Marche province. The fossils were compared to a database of measurements taken from modern African and fossil European hippos.

"The German fossil from Unterma?feld is the largest hippo ever found in Europe, estimated to weigh up to 3.5 tonnes," said Mazza. "The Collecurti specimen was also large, but interestingly even though it was close in both time and distance to the Colle Lepre specimen the latter specimen was 25% smaller. A final specimen, an old female from Ortona in central Italy, was smaller again. It was 17% smaller than the Collecurti fossil and approximately 50% lighter."

The team found that a clear size threshold separated hippo specimens which heralded from different parts of the Pleistocene age. The hippos from the early Pleistocene were the largest ever known while smaller specimens emerged during the middle Pleistocene. Larger specimens briefly reappeared during the late Pleistocene.

"We believe the size difference was connected to the changing environmental conditions throughout the Pleistocene," said Mazza. "The Ortona hippo, the smallest of the specimens, lived in a climate where glacial cycles turned colder, while cold steppes replaced warm ones across the Mediterranean."

The drop in temperature and rainfall during the Pleistocene caused significant changes to plant life across Europe resulting in an expansion of grassy steppes. Being grazers hippos may have been expected to thrive in this new environment. Unexpectedly they appeared to shrink, only re-attaining their past size during the warm periods of the late Pleistocene, when forests and woodland re-colonised the steppes.

During their time in Europe hippos were forced to live in habitats influenced by a general environmental trend towards cooler and drier conditions. In response hippos achieved giant sizes during warmer and relatively more humid stages, but became smaller, and even very small, under non-ideal environmental conditions.

"While hippos are normally considered indicators of warm, temperate habitats this research shows that temperature was not only the controlling factor for their ancient ancestors," concluded Mazza. "Our research suggests other factors, such as food availability, were equally important. Appreciating the importance of factors beyond temperature is of great significance as we consider how species may adapt to future ecological and environmental changes."

Chicago Sun-Times Hires Jenny McCarthy as ... - Reporting on Health

If it's attention Chicago Sun-Times execs wanted by hiring Jenny McCarthy as a columnist and blogger, they certainly got it. Perhaps not the kind they wanted.

As Robert Feder (no relation) wrote in Time Out Chicago today:

That sound you?re hearing is Mike Royko, Sydney J. Harris and Herman Kogan spinning in their graves. Late Thursday, the Sun-Times announced the hiring of actress, author and former Playboy Playmate Jenny McCarthy as its newest columnist. Ask Jenny will appear Sundays in the newspaper?s Splash?section, and her blog will run Monday through Friday at splash.suntimes.com, starting next week. The column will answer reader questions about ?love, sex, parenting, friendship, fitness and more,? while the blog will focus on ?the daily joys, juggle and struggles of being a single mother? to McCarthy?s 10-year-old son Evan.

McCarthy may be famous for a lot of reasons ? Playboy playmate, actress, ex-girlfriend of Jim Carrey ? but she is roundly criticized by health experts and many journalists for her views on autism. As a celebrity parent of an autistic son, McCarthy is a leading and sadly influential voice in the discredited movement to blame vaccines for autism. Public health experts fervently wish that she would just shut up.

Predictably, the online reaction to her hiring was swift and brutal:

Jenny McCarthy Signs Deal to Endanger Children via Chicago Newspaper - goo.gl/YeLRf via @patheos

? Melody Hensley (@MelodyHensley) October 19, 2012

Journalist Seth Mnookin, author of The Panic Virus, which examines the viral growth of the myth that vaccines cause autism and other developmental disorders, has previously blasted the Sun-Times for giving McCarthy a forum for her anti-vaccine, anti-science views. Here is an excerpt of the Panic Virus that deals with McCarthy.

Now the Sun Times has given McCarthy an even bigger platform, and that's a travesty.

Google to Verizon Android clients: carrier billing coming to Play store

DNP Google tweet to Verizon clients 'Pay for Google Play apps on your phone bill'

If you're on Verizon and don't feel like racking up your plastic when you buy Play store apps or content, the carrier will soon give you the option of putting it on your phone bill, according to a recent Google tweet. Mountain View's had the option for a while now, with T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T having already jumped on the app-billing bandwagon, which left Verizon as the final major to climb aboard. Other than saying that you'll be able to bill apps and music that way, details are scant -- but considering Big Red's whopping Android lineup, it's about time.

5 things that could sink Windows 8

2 hrs.

The Windows?8 launch is finally upon us, and I guarantee you there are a lot of nervous people in Redmond right now. How could they not be?

You?re about to launch a new version of your operating system that is such a radical departure from what PC users have come to expect that it should be called "Windows We Hope You?re Ready for Something Really Different." Sheer inertia is certainly a concern. After all, the Live Tiles, panoramic Modern-style interface and new tools like the Charms menu all require a learning curve. But that?s not the biggest challenge Microsoft?faces. These are.

1. Hardware is too pricey
One of the biggest reasons ultrabooks haven?t sold as well as Intel and its partners expected is that prices haven?t come down fast enough. You can finally find some in the $699 range, but that?s still about $200 more than the typical budget laptop.

Now, shoppers will be asked to pony up $1,100 to $1,200 to enjoy touch-based convertibles like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, Sony VAIO Duo 11 and Dell XPS 12. Intel shared with us recently that its own studies show that consumers are willing to pay $150 to $200 more for touch, but I?m not sure that will fly in a down economy and a holiday season dominated by the cheap iPad mini, Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

Windows RT devices like Microsoft?s Surface are more affordable at $499, the same as the iPad. But opting for the Touch Cover keyboard (the accessory being touted in Microsoft?s ads) brings the price to $599.

Windows 8-powered hybrids like the $749 Acer Iconia W510 (with keyboard) and Samsung Ativ Smart PC 500T (I swear I?m not making that name up) don?t have the same sexy industrial design as the Surface, but their Atom processors make these devices more versatile because users can run traditional desktop apps. You can get the W510 without a keyboard for a reasonable $499.

[MORE: Top 10 Windows 8 Hybrids]

2. Windows 8 vs. Windows RT confusion
Shoppers will have a tough time telling the difference between the two flavors of new Windows devices on shelves this holiday season, because they both feature the same slick Live Tile interface. But there is a huge difference between the two platforms.

In a nutshell, Windows 8 PCs can run any app downloaded from the Windows Store as well as all desktop applications. Windows RT tablets and hybrids (powered by ARM processors) will be limited to Windows Store apps and Microsoft?s Office 2013, even though you?ll still be able to access the desktop for things like transferring files?off a USB drive.

Sounds like a pretty simple delineation, but as The Verge proved with some undercover testing, Microsoft?s own store employees don?t know the difference between the two operating systems. Microsoft responded to this eye-opening report by saying that all of its sales reps will receive 15 hours of training before launch. The clock is ticking.

[MORE: 8 Windows 8 Annoyances and How to Fix Them]

3. Not enough apps
At last count there were nearly 3,500 apps in the Windows Store. And while there are a handful of compelling options so far, there are a lot more holes in Microsoft?s lineup than I would expect at this late stage. Where is Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Dropbox? Angry Birds??

The good news: Microsoft will unveil plenty of high-profile apps either at the launch of its OS or shortly thereafter, hopefully filling in a fair number of these holes. But I still have serious concerns about the breadth of options that will be available. After all, Apple has 250,000 apps just for the iPad, thanks to its huge head start.

Microsoft also needs to prove that Windows 8 is a viable gaming platform and not just rest on the Xbox name, as it has done with Windows Phone. Shoppers need to see console-quality eye candy along with casual fare. I?m encouraged by the fact that the Unreal Engine III has been ported to Windows 8, however, which should help lead to Infinity Blade-style titles in the Windows Store. Titles based on the Unity engine will come after launch.

[MORE: Top 20 Windows 8 Apps]

4. Crappy touchpads
Sure, Windows 8 works best with touch, but the sweet spot for most shoppers right now is $500 clamshell designs that rely on touchpads. Based on previous experience, I?m very worried that these pointing devices won?t deliver the smooth gesture support that will add up to a good user experience. On a lot of pre-production samples I?ve tried the touchpad didn?t always respond when I swiped in from the left to switch apps. And most of them didn?t support the gesture to move in from the left and quickly back to the right to see all of your open apps.

If notebook vendors can?t make pinch-to- zoom work well or two-finger scrolling, they?ll have an even harder time getting Windows 8 gestures to work reliably. I?m really hoping Synaptics, Microsoft and OEMs get it right, but it will probably take a while.

[MORE: Crappy Touchpads Could Kill the Ultrabook]

5. Macs on the rise
Microsoft shouldn?t just be concerned about the iPad and the rumored "iPad Mini." It should take note that Apple is now No. 1 in notebook sales in the U.S. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is consistently the top seller at retail, and all you need to do is peek inside any coffee shop to see a sea of MacBook Airs. I?ve said this before, but the Mac's?OS X?Mountain Lion could prove more attractive than Windows 8?to those looking for a more traditional operating system this holiday, especially for those who own other Apple devices and like the idea of having iCloud keeping everything in sync.

[MORE:?10 Reasons to Drop Windows for Mountain Lion]

Bottom line
Microsoft is reportedly spending $1.5 billion to launch and promote Windows 8, and the company has never been under more pressure to make sure that shoppers get the message. But what is that message? Is it that you can have your cake and eat it too with a Windows 8 PC that runs mobile and ?legacy? apps? That you can get all-day battery life, iPad-like portability and Office productivity with a Windows RT device? It?s actually all of the above, which is a big part of the challenge.

Although Microsoft?having a hero device like the Surface tablet?helps, Windows 8 will succeed or fail not based on how well the Surface fares. Just as with every other Windows launch, Microsoft will once again rely on an ecosystem of app developers and hardware?makers to make its software sing. All of the above five obstacles are not insurmountable, but they?re very real.

Finance Project ? The Worthy Venture with Structured Settlements

There are a lot of people who have earned their compensations in many different ways. Some are anticipating for monetary gains in the future because they have worked as employees when they are younger. Some have been allotted money due to winnings in the lottery or annuities. But these monetary rewards are written on paper and may not be used for emergent situations where cash is needed very badly. What most people with financial assets bound to be received in the future do is that they turn to JG Wentworth Reviews for help. Wentworth is a company geared to providing cash in structured settlement schemes.

J.G. Wentworth is a financial institution which helps those who are badly in need of money to settle financial obligations the soonest time possible. It employs a purchasing system which can be easily followed by its clients. It does not take such a long time before you can pay for hospital bills, medications, your child?s tuition fees, or any other circumstances which oblige you to produce a large amount of cash. The real idea behind structured settlements is for people to be given that chance to earn lump sum cash without having to undergo the tedious impacts of huge interest rates offered by lending institutions and banks.

Most clients who have expressed their gratitude over the services of the company were thankful of the fact that there are companies like Wentworth which allows them to benefit from their annuities as early as possible. In some published JG Wentworth Reviews, past consumers were able to free themselves from financial obligations the easiest and most comfortable way possible. They were just asked to fill out an application form from the site, submit the requirements to the representatives of the company and wait for less than a month to be able to get the lump sum they desire.

Wentworth is indeed the answer for the problems of those who do not have enough savings and money at hand to resolve their financial dilemmas. It is the best tandem when trying to make sense out of anticipated cash and other monetary rewards. It just takes one good click on the Wentworth site and some comprehensive documents in order to take that lump sum cash. This should not only pay for debts and bills but should also be the anchor of profitable businesses ahead. The money from the company can indeed redefine the quality of your life.
