Happy 1st day of May and one month closer to summer vacation! And as summer draws near, so do the risks of sunburns and skin cancer. May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. This month is dedicated to increase awareness of Skin Cancer and promote the importance of skin safety.
Before your students head home for the summer, make sure they know about ways to prevent skin cancer. Check out some of Discovery Educations videos such as ?Sun Sense? which provides important facts about sun exposure, and recommends safety strategies for protecting the skin.

As you prepare for the hot summer sun, be sure to follow some of the safety precautions to steer clear from one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States.
- Reduce your exposure to the sun between 10am and 4pm when UV rays are their strongest
- Apply a generous amount of sunscreen (the higher the SPF the better!)
- Wear a hat to protect your face from the sun
- Wear sunglasses that block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible
- Be aware of medications that make you more sensitive to the sun
- Avoid the tanning salon
- Check your skin regularly and report any changes that you notice to your doctor
We hope that you all stay safe and help promote awareness to win the battle against skin cancer!
