Credit Card Safety Tips And Tricks - Finance

If you are a first time credit card owner, it would behoove you to learn the proper procedures and security measures to make sure that your credit card is safe. We have come up with this article and the guidelines to be discussed hereafter, which could help you greatly diminish the chances of somebody misusing it. You might surmise correctly that there are indeed identity criminals who have hurdled these challenges and broken through every security defence possible, but the majority of these individuals are rank amateurs who can be stymied by the tips below. You have heard it before and you will here it again ? it is better to be safe than to be sorry later on.

As you may well know by now, you would be asked to sign your card as a precaution the moment you receive it. Look for the space designated on the back of the card and sign it upon receipt. This is but a basic precaution to ensure that no one steals it and uses it before you can sign on it.

When you visit an ATM, ensure that no one is hanging about the place or peering above your shoulder. They could easily get your PIN and then there is nothing you can do. Whilst you are punching in the PIN on the keypad, make your finger movements as elusive as possible so as to protect your number from anybody trying to copy it.

Do not toss your ATM receipt into the rubbish bin ? shred it instead, and after you withdraw at the cash machine, do not leave without getting the receipt! You must always ensure that you leave the ATM only after the screen returns to the original and not before you have closed the operation entirely. For sure there are varlets waiting to attack upon noticing a customer who would rather not be bothered waiting for the ?bloody confirmation? on the cash machine.

Never ever give your credit card number to anyone unless you made the call. When using your mobile phone or a cordless, the last thing you want to do is say your credit card number when speaking to a merchant. There are a lot of reprobates out there who can steal your personal information by eavesdropping ? with radio scanners, that is! You might find a call soon after you give your card number asking you to repeat the number or they might even say they seem to be experiencing some problem and you need to repeat the number. All such calls are spell danger and are best avoided. Call your contact at the store immediately and verify the call.

Lastly, make sure that after you have made a purchase, your card is returned immediately, and keep a comprehensive listing of all your credit cards, their customer service numbers (preferably with a 24/7 800 hotline) so you can safely report your card lost if it goes missing. Review your statement carefully once you get it. There may be some unauthorized activity. So that you do not have the onus of paying for something that you did not purchase, notify your financial institution or card provider immediately to arrange for a dispute to be filed.
