Colombo Cricket Club v Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club ? Premier Limited Over Tournament, 2012/13 (Group A) ? Match Update ? Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club win by 83 runs
Putting forth a focused all-round display, the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club claimed a comprehensive 83-run win over the Colombo Cricket Club, in their Group A match during the ongoing Premier Limited Over Tournament, played at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on December 30.
The Tamil Union CAC won the toss and chose to bat first, and proceeded to claim a dominant stance in the match from the very start, despite the efforts of the Colombo CC?s Arosh Janoda (9-0-71-4). Opening batsman Ashen Silva (51) remained fixed at the top for a prolonged period, and formed a number of partnerships which put the team on solid ground.
The first was his 88-run opening stand with Mahela Udawatte (63), which came to an end with the dismissal of the latter at the hands of Janoda. However, Silva powered on, and joined forces with TM Sampath (41) for a 68-run stand for the second wicket.
Sampath soon fell prey to Dinuka Hettiarachchi, and his dismissal was followed by the departures of his successor, skipper Sachithra Serasinghe (8), and Silva, leaving the team at 176 for 4. However, the team?s momentum did not flag at any point, as Rumesh Buddika (56) and wicketkeeper batsman Muditha Fernando (56) teamed up for a 112-run partnership for the 5th wicket.
Their combined efforts, coupled with those of Thilan Thushara (29), gained the team a significant upper-hand, and after the dismissal of all three batsmen, with Pulina Tharanga (0*) remaining the lone player standing at the crease, the Tamil Union CAC posted a formidable final total of 324 by the end of 50 overs.
The team then followed up with a concentrated bowling attack, which saw all 7 bowlers claiming at least one wicket each, while Chamil Sumathipala (4-1-13-2) and Saranga Rajaguru (10-1-58-2) picked up two each.
The Colombo CC?s innings was peppered with mediocre performances, and while most of the batsmen managed to get starts, they failed to convert them into sizeable scores for their team ? among these were top-order batsmen Roy Silva (24) and Sameen Kandanearachchi (20), and Hasantha Fernando (25) from the middle order.
Coming in at number 8, Maduka Liyanapathiranage top-scored for the team with an unbeaten 80, but his efforts, along with those of lower-order batsmen Arosh Janoda (29) and skipper Dinuka Hettiarachchi (33), came too late to save the team. By the end of 50 overs, with 9 wickets down, the Colombo CC had only managed to reach 241, and the Tamil Union CAC went on to claim a comprehensive 83-run win.
