Top senator: Close gun background check loopholes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says closing loopholes in the background check system for gun purchasers won't threaten firearms owners' Second Amendment rights to own a gun and is a matter of common sense.

In a prepared statement for his committee's hearing Wednesday on curbing guns, Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy says that after the killing of elementary school students and staffers in Newtown, Conn., it is time to stop sloganeering and partisan recriminations on the subject.

Leahy says the background check system needs strengthening. By law, anyone buying a gun from a licensed dealer must have a background check, with convicted criminals and people with mental problems barred from purchases. Gun buyers at gun shows and online don't need the check.

Boy snatched from school bus, held hostage in bunker

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

WSFA.com

Multiple local and county officials were on the scene of the shootng Tuesday, Jan. 29, near Midland City, Ala.

A boy was being held hostage in a bunker in Alabama early Wednesday by a man who seized him from a school bus after fatally shooting the driver, witnesses and police said.

Authorities were negotiating with the man overnight at the scene near Midland City.

The driver of the bus died from gunshot wounds on Tuesday afternoon and the suspect was not in custody, according to the Dale County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses told NBC station WSFA that the suspect boarded the bus and ordered some children off before grabbing a boy aged 5 or 6, shooting the driver and fleeing towards his nearby home.

Michael Senn, who is minister of a nearby church, told the station that he spoke to several children on the bus, including a girl who said the driver was shot four times. He described one 13-year-old as "really traumatized."

Mike Creel, who said he was the suspect?s neighbor, told the station the suspect had hidden ?in his homemade bomb shelter.? However, officials described it as a storm shelter.

Creel said the suspect has lived on the property for around two years and that the underground shelter was ?one of the first things he started building."

The station said police believed the child was "OK" and that police were conducting negotiations with the suspect using a plastic pipe.

Other neighbors identified the suspect to the local newspaper, the Dothan Eagle, as a 67-year-old man. NBC News was unable to confirm this early Wednesday.

Lisa Harden, of the Dale County School District Office, said the bus was on a route that served all local schools, and had children of all ages on board.

Dale County and Ozark city schools will be closed Wednesday, officials said.

"Due to the sensitive nature of the open and ongoing incident, limited details are being released at this time," Dale County Sheriff's Department said in a 10 p.m. local time (11 pm. ET) Tuesday update.

The update added that nearby residents had been evacuated "as a precautionary measure as public safety remains paramount in this situation."

NBA Trade Rumors: Teams That Should Help Facilitate Rudy Gay to Toronto Deal

A willing third party is all that is holding up the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors from pulling the trigger on a trade that would send forward Rudy Gay to Canada.

Yahoo! Sports? Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Jan. 29 that Raptors guard Jose Calderon?s expiring $10.5 million contract is a riddle that is currently puzzling the two teams and preventing the deal.

Sweetening the pot for a team to take on Calderon for the rest of the season might not be too hard considering there is little to lose for teams because his pricey contract will expire at the end of the season.

Still, moving him has proved to be difficult.

"With so many quality point guards, they're struggling to find a spot for Calderon," an unnamed league general manager said, according to Wojnarowski.

If that's all that's holding it up, there shouldn't be a problem working...

AP Source: Rudy Gay headed to Toronto

Rudy Gay is on his way to Toronto in the latest and most dramatic move in the Memphis Grizzlies makeover, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

The Grizzlies agreed to trade their star swingman to the Raptors on Wednesday, parting with the leading scorer on a team that has aspirations of making a run in the powerful Western Conference. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

The Raptors gave up point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis in the deal, and another person familiar with the negotiations said the Grizzlies were in discussion with the Detroit Pistons to swap Calderon for Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.

The moves surprised many around the league, including Calderon.

"It's been my home for eight years," Calderon said in Atlanta, shortly before leaving the arena. "I've done everything possible for this team. It's tough. The fans have been with me since Day 1. It's tough."

Prince and Daye were both listed as inactive for the game against the Pacers in Indiana on Wednesday night, but a Pistons spokesman decline to comment.

Gay, averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds, signed a five-year, $82 million maximum contract in July 2010 with Memphis. The 6-foot-8 small forward is due $16.5 million this season with $37 million more over the next two years. That's a big number for new owner Robert Pera, who took over the franchise last November and has quickly started addressing the team's salary situation.

Just over a week ago, the Grizzlies sent valuable reserve Marreese Speights and two other players to Cleveland in a move that cleared $6.4 million in salary and avoided a $4 million luxury tax hit this season. Team officials said that move put the Grizzlies in position not to have to make a move this season.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins had been lobbying to keep his five starters together the rest of this season, but he apparently lost that fight. It's a significant move for a team that was fourth in the Western Conference and three games behind the third-place Clippers.

"Wow," Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley tweeted.

Trading away Gay also eases a luxury tax hit due next season, while concentrating the team around center Marc Gasol and All-Star forward Zach Randolph. The Grizzlies had their best playoff run in 2011 when they knocked off then-No. 1 seed San Antonio before losing to Oklahoma City in seven games in the Western semifinals ? all with Gay on the bench after needing season-ending shoulder surgery.

"Wow that was 1 crazy trade today," Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins tweeted. "Are you serious Rudy Gay is right there under KD, Lebron, Kobe, and Melo. (hashtag)badtrade."

They do run the risk of upsetting the chemistry on a tight-knit group, even if there were some questions of how Gay's scoring fit in with the ball-dominant frontcourt of Gasol and Randolph.

But there may be more deals like this one coming in the new NBA economy.

The collective bargaining agreement negotiated after last year's lockout makes the penalties for exceeding the salary cap far more punitive, and the system begins in earnest next season. Playing in a smaller market, the Grizzlies don't have the extra revenue from lavish television contracts like teams in Los Angeles or New York, which makes it that much more difficult to go over the cap. But even teams such as the Lakers and Bulls will likely have to be more responsible with their spending under the new deal, where repeat offenders are taxed at rates that multiply with each consecutive year they go over the cap.

All told, the Grizzlies will save nearly $40 million over the next three years after the two trades.

They'll get a hard-nosed defender in return in Prince, the 32-year-old forward who was the last holdover from the proud Pistons championship team in 2003-04. He is averaging 11.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season.

Calderon joined the Raptors from Spain in 2005 and has been a fan favorite and trusted veteran on the team. He is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 assists this season for the Raptors (16-29), who are desperately trying to scratch their way into the playoff picture. Toronto was in 11th place before the games were played Wednesday, but still only 2? games behind Philadelphia for the eight seed.

Calderon and Davis had both been starting for the Raptors, but they do have Kyle Lowry waiting in the wings at point guard and likely see Gay's scoring punch as the key to vaulting back into the discussion in a mediocre conference.

Coach Dwane Casey will have to deal with a bit of a log jam with Gay, DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross, Landry Fields and Alan Anderson as wing players with similar skill sets. But getting a player with Gay's natural scoring talent, even at the expense of parting with a valued player like Calderon, proved too enticing to pass up.

"Hopefully this team is back to the playoffs as soon as possible," Calderon said.

Moviehole.Net :: Movie, TV & Entertainment News | Film, DVD & Blu ...

Various sources, including TheWrap (who had it first), are reporting that J.J Abrams (?Star Trek?) is in final talks to helm the next ?Star Wars? movie.

Abrams had previously said he had rejected the offer to helm ?Star Wars Episode VII?, the first of three new installments in the long-running science-fiction series, but seems he was either a) lying b) about to be lured by way of some big bucks c) covering his ass so Paramount, who he does the ?Star Trek? movies with, didn?t find out. Not then, anyway. And that way.

Abrams and Ben Affleck were apparently the two contenders for the job .

Michael Arndt is writing the first installment in the new trilogy, due 2015.

Here?s what TheWrap has :

Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams, one of the most successful directors and producers in Hollywood ? and a man beloved by fanboys.?He runs one of the industry?s top production companies, Bad Robot, and created or co-created television franchises like ?Lost,? ?Fringe? and ?Alias.? He has also directed film spectacles ?Mission: Impossible III,? ?Star Trek? and ?Super 8.?

The lure of the Jedi was too strong, and it will no doubt complicate his relationship with Paramount, where Bad Robot is a top supplier.?Abrams has been feverishly working?on ?Star Trek Into Darkness,? his second?Star?Trek film since he rebooted the franchise in 2009. ?Into Darkness,? still in post-production, opens May 18.

Though he has several producing jobs in front of him, Abrams?had been uncommitted as a director. He will have to jump right into ?Star Wars,? which Disney has slated for a 2015 release. ?Little Miss Sunshine? screenwriter Michael Arndt is penning the script.

Reached by TheWrap, Lynne Hale, spokeswoman for Lucasfilm, declined to comment immediately. Neither CAA, which represents Abrams, nor Bad Robot immediately responded to requests for comment.

Exciting times!

Tina Fey in Talks for Muppets Sequel

tina-fey-the-muppets-2-sequel

As the series finale of 30 Rock looms closer, creator/star Tina Fey is lining up a pretty swell gig for her next project.? Heat Vision reports that Fey is in late-stage negotiations to star as the female lead in the upcoming sequel to The Muppets.? This is welcome news, as Fey should make for a nice foil opposite male lead Ricky Gervais.? The two previously worked together in Gervais? 2009 film The Invention of Lying, though one assumes their rapport will be more family-friendly while they?re flanked by The Muppets.

Ty Burrell is set to star as the film?s villain, a lazy Interpol inspector, and Fey will apparently be playing a Russian gulag prison guard in the Europe-set follow-up.? Given all this prison and law-breaking talk, it sure sounds like our Muppet friends may find themselves behind bars at some point in the film.? Production is set to begin later this month in London with returning director James Bobin, who also co-wrote the script alongside? The Muppets scribe Nicholas Stoller.? Fey will next be seen hosting the Golden Globes with Amy Poehler this coming Sunday, January 13th.

2013 Tax Changes - New Laws and Tax Brackets

Congress was able to come up with a fiscal cliff deal at the last possible moment, but the deal will result in some significant tax changes for some Americans in 2013. If you want to know how your personal income taxes will change this year, read on.

2013 tax changes

There are some major tax changes coming your way!

The tax changes for individuals and families is a mixed bag with the fiscal cliff deal. Thankfully a majority of the changes are permanent which allows for much easier planning across the board.

Social Security Tax Up 2%

Social Security Tax IncreaseTechnically speaking, your Social Security tax paid out of each paycheck will increase by 2% in 2013 to 6.2%.

While some will call this a tax increase (because technically, compared to 2012, the rate is higher) in reality this is really a removal of a stimulus bill reduction in the tax rate. The Social Security tax has been set at 6.2% since 1990 (and hasn?t been below 5% since 1973!), and only in the last few years was it temporarily dropped to 4.2% through a stimulus bill. The idea was to put more money in the pockets of Americans so they would go out and spend ? which is good for the economy.

Now that the economy is on the mend it was considered a fine time to let the temporary discount expire to put the rate back at the normal 6.2%. (And note that this tax rate only applies to the first $113,700 of taxable earnings. That amount is also an increase from 2012?s maximum taxable earning level of $110,100.)

Investment Income Tax Changes for Top Earners

One piece of the Bush-Era Tax Cuts dropped the income tax on investment (dividend and capital gains) income to 15% for all earners. Thanks to the fiscal cliff deal this is now locked in at 15%? except for the top wage earners. For those wage earners the capital gains and dividend income tax goes up to 20% from the previous year?s 15%.

Marginal Tax Rate Increase for Top Earners

Unfortunately for those in the top tax bracket their income tax went up across the board, not just for investment income. The top bracket paid a marginal 35% in 2012; that rate increases to 39.6% in 2013.

The 2013 Income Tax Brackets looks like this:

  • 10%
    • Single: $0 ? $8,925
    • Married Filing Joint: $0 ? $17,850
    • Married Filing Separate: $0 ? $12,750
  • 15%
    • Single: $8,925 ? $36,250
    • Married Filing Joint: $17,850 ? $72,500
    • Married Filing Separate: $12,750 ? $48,600
  • 25%
    • Single: $36,250 ? $87,850
    • Married Filing Joint: $72,500 ? $146,400
    • Married Filing Separate: $48,600 ? $125,450
  • 28%
    • Single: $87,850 ? $183,250
    • Married Filing Joint: $146,400 ? $223,050
    • Married Filing Separate: $125,450 ? $203,150
  • 33%
    • Single: $183,250 ? $398,350
    • Married Filing Joint: $223,050 ? $398,350
    • Married Filing Separate: $203,150 ? $398,350
  • 39.6%
    • Single: $400,000+
    • Married Filing Joint: $450,000+
    • Married Filing Separate: $425,000+

Alternative Minimum Tax Fixed

This is a big win for taxpayers. The dreaded AMT (or Alternative Minimum Tax) monster would come around each April to snag a few more taxpayers in its grasp. The decades old AMT was designed to keep the ultra-rich from being able to pay zero tax. A noble cause that left out one important detail: tying the income level to inflation. As time wore on and inflation drove incomes up, more and more households were caught by the Alternative Minimum Tax. Each year Congress would have to put an AMT patch bill in to essentially manually push up the income level. If they failed to do so, you might have ended up paying the AMT that year.

Thankfully, the AMT is now permanently patched. This will save millions of households from being caught by the AMT where many common deductions are thrown out.

Personal Exemption Phase Out

When you file your taxes you are given a personal exemption that reduces your tax liability. Starting this year that personal exemption will phase out for higher incomes. Single filers will have their personal exemption phase out at $250,000 while married couples filing joint will lose their exemptions at $300,000 (married separate filers will hit it at $150,000; head of household filers at $275,000).

Itemized Deductions Phase Out

Likewise there is a provision that will phase out up to 80% of your itemized deductions if you hit the income category. The income limits are similar to the above phase outs: $250,000 for singles, $300,000 for married couples, $150,000 for married filing separate, and $275,000 for head of household filers.

Gift and Estate Tax Permanent Changes

Another relatively positive change is in the estate tax. Similar to the Alternative Minimum Tax problem listed above, the estate tax was constantly in flux. It might be better to die next year than this year, or vice versa, based on those specific year?s estate tax rules.

Now the estate tax rule is permanent: you may pass on $5 million to your heirs without paying estate tax. The maximum tax rate did go up from 35% to 40% for individuals passing on more than $5 million, but for a majority of Americans a $5 million is more than enough. And like the AMT, that $5 million amount will rise each year with inflation.

One last plus: the right to leave your unused estate tax exemption to your surviving spouse was also made permanent.

Various Tax Credits and Deductions Extended or Made Permanent

There were several tax credits and deductions that were extended. The range of the extensions is through just 2013 all the way through 2017.

Child Tax Credit Extended Through 2017

This was thought to be at risk, but the $1,000 per child (under age 17) tax credit was extended through 2017.

$250 Educator Expense Deduction

As the husband to an educator I was glad to see this included. Educators can deduct $250 for items they buy out of pocket for their classrooms. (And most, if not all great teachers easily spend this each year.)

$500 Home Energy Efficient Credit Extended

This credit expired in 2011, but the new tax code brings it back not only for 2013 but retroactively for 2012. If you made some green energy or energy efficient upgrades to your home last year (or will in the coming year) you can take this credit.

Deduct State and Local Sales Tax Extended?

This deduction expired in 2011, but has been extended for not only 2013 but retroactively to 2012 as well. It allows tax filers in states with little or no income tax to instead deduct state and local sales tax they paid instead.

Higher Education Tuition Deduction Extended

Likewise the tuition deduction ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 depending on your income level expired in 2011. It too has been extended for 2013 and retroactively put in place for 2012.

Earned Income Tax Credits Extended Through 2017

The increase in earned income tax credit income levels (to avoid the credits being diminished) were extended through 2017.

Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Income Tax Break Extended

When you lose your house to foreclosure or short sale, the bank is agreeing to wipe away thousands of dollars in debt on the mortgage. Under normal rules a forgiven debt counts as income for tax purposes. But with the housing market being crushed since roughly 2007 and many families losing homes to foreclosure, Congress has given a tax break on this specific type of debt forgiveness. That tax break has been extended through 2013.

Automakers look to curb drowsy driving

12 hrs.

Have you ever caught yourself nodding off behind the wheel? You wouldn?t be alone. As many as a third of all drivers admit they?ve done so at some time or another, and drowsy driving catches the blame for at least 100,000 crashes and more than 1,500 deaths annually in the United States.

A new study by the Centers for Disease Control?finds that one of every 24 U.S. adults say?they?ve fallen asleep while driving at least once during the previous month ? and experts believe that number is low because motorists often don?t realize when they?ve had a second or two ?micro-sleep.?

Even a moment dozing off can be disastrous, however, considering that at just 60 miles per hour a vehicle will travel about 88 feet, or about four to five car lengths.

?If I?m on the road, I?d be a little worried about the other drivers? after reading the results of the study, said lead author Anne Wheaton of the CDC.

The telephone survey reached out to 147,076 adults in 19 states and the District of Columbia, making it the largest poll of its kind. It revealed that 4 percent of respondents said they've?nodding off during the previous month at least once.

100,000 crashes a year
Earlier studies, such as one conducted by the National Sleep Foundation in 2005, have been even more worrisome. The NSF reported that?60 percent?of adult drivers drove a vehicle while drowsy at least once during the prior year, while 37 percent?said they actually nodded off. And of those who acknowledged falling asleep, 13 percent said they routinely did that at least once a month.

The Sleep Foundation study also revealed 4 percent of its survey pool admitted either having an accident or a near accident because they were drowsy or fell asleep behind the wheel.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated?100,000 crashes a year are?caused by sleepy motorists ? resulting in an estimated 40,000 injuries and 1,550 deaths annually.

The latest CDC research found that men are more likely to nod off behind the wheel, as are drivers between the ages of 25 and 34 and those who routinely get less than six hours of sleep a night.? An earlier Gallup survey found males are twice as likely as women to drive drowsy.

Part of the challenge for researchers is to get accurate results as everyone defines drowsy driving differently and motorists may often be unaware that they?ve actually nodded off for a second or two.

Car technology
A study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute used cameras and other sensors in 100 vehicles to see what happens on the road. Though the numbers were small, the year-long study allowed researchers to project that drowsiness contributed, to some degree, to 20 percent of all crashes. They estimated a drowsy motorist is four to six times more likely to be involved in a collision than one who is wide awake.

Unlike drunk drivers, it can be difficult for police to detect a drowsy driver. But new technology is aimed at alerting motorists themselves. A number of vehicles, including products from Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, are programmed to spot signs that a driver is getting sleepy. Some look for specific steering wheel inputs, another system aims a camera at the driver?s face.

Most of the technologies simply try to flag a driver if that happens, perhaps by flashing a coffee cup emblem somewhere on the instrument panel or sounding a chime.

Ford has added a drowsy driving alert that it has paired with the optional new Lane-Keeping Assist system on the 2013 Fusion sedan. It uses a forward-facing camera to watch for visible road markings, alerting the driver by vibrating the steering wheel if the system senses the car drifting out of its lane.

?We found the drivers we talked to were definitely inclined toward features that provided real practical benefits by alerting them to potentially hazardous situations they may have missed,? according to Billy Mann, managing director of Penn Schoen Berland, which conducted a recent survey for Ford looking at how consumers reacted to new safety technology.

MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | Are Annuities the ...

nest egg

Do you want guaranteed income for life? Who doesn?t? That?s why insurance companies are ramping up their marketing of annuities.

But before you buy in, you should know what you?re getting into. Annuities are not that easy to understand and they may not be right for every retirement situation.

Here are some basics to understand, plus some pros and cons.

What are Annuities?

Annuities are financial contracts issued by a life insurance company that offer tax-deferred savings and a choice of payout options ? income for life, income for a certain time period or a lump sum ? to meet your retirement needs.

Because an annuity contract gets tax-deferred treatment, the IRS may impose an early-withdrawal penalty of 10 percent for some distributions if they?re taken before age 59 ?.

Types of Annuities

When buying an annuity, you?re trading a lump sum of money in return for a stream of income, but annuities come in many flavors, which can make them confusing.

The two major categories of annuities are ?immediate? and ?deferred.?

With an immediate annuity, payments to you start immediately or within one year of the policy?s issue. You use this type when you want to start taking income as soon as possible.

A deferred annuity has two phases. During the accumulation phase, you defer those income payments, letting your money grow on a tax-deferred basis for several years.

Then there?s the payout phase, when you start receiving scheduled payments.

There are a few types of deferred annuities to consider:

  • Fixed annuity. The insurance company agrees to pay you no less than a specified rate of interest during the time your account is growing. It also agrees that the periodic payments will be a specified amount per dollar in your account. These payments may last for a definite period, such as 20 years, or an indefinite period, such as the lifetime of you and your spouse.
  • Variable annuity. ?If you want more access to more investment options, you can choose from among a range of them, typically mutual funds, to invest your purchase payments. The rate of return on your payments, and the amount you eventually receive, will vary depending on the performance of the investment options you have selected.
  • Indexed annuity. A blend between a fixed and a variable, where the insurance company invests in a mix of stocks and bonds designed to credit you with a return based on changes in a particular index, such as the S&P 500. In a falling stock market, indexed annuity contracts guarantee a minimum return, typically three percent.

The Pros and the Cons of Annuities

Regarding immediate annuities, guaranteed income for life is a great benefit, but it comes at a cost. First, you?re giving up access your money in exchange for the income stream.

Therefore, your wisest move is to invest with only a portion of your total portfolio.

Additionally, most immediate annuities provide for fixed payments, which aren?t adjusted for inflation.

While we may be in a low-inflation environment today, what happens if prices rise substantially during your annuity?s payout period?

Also to consider: By investing in an annuity, you?re also investing in the company that issues it. That guaranteed stream of income is only as good as the financial stability of the company writing the contract.

As we all learned just a few years ago, insurance companies ? even the biggest ones ? can run into major problems.

Deferred annuities also share the same lack of liquidity as immediate annuities, and they also have some additional downsides.

While insurance companies market their tax advantages, there are four big issues surrounding those benefits:

Tax rate: When you start withdrawing money, the earnings (but not the principal) will be taxed at your ordinary income rate, not the lower capital-gains rate typically applied to investments held for more than one year, like stocks, bonds and mutual funds.

That can add up to big tax payments, especially for those in high tax brackets.

Tax-advantaged accounts: There are some financial advisers or insurance agents that recommend variable or indexed annuities for accounts that are already tax deferred, like IRAs and 401(K)s. That?s absolutely unnecessary, because those accounts are already tax advantaged.

If someone tries to sell you a variable annuity to hold in a tax-deferred account, head for the exit.

Estate planning: When it comes to annuities and estate planning, proceeds from most deferred annuities don?t receive a ?step up? in basis (when an asset?s value is priced at the higher market value at the time of inheritance rather the value at which it was originally purchased.

Other investments (like stocks, bonds and mutual funds again) do provide a step up in basis at the owner?s death, which can limit tax liability for the heirs. Deferred annuities can?t offer that benefit.

Fees: But the biggest con for this annuity type is the sky-high costs. Mortality and expense charges, administrative fees, fund expenses, charges for special features and the salesperson?s commission can eat up 2% to 3% of your investment value every year.

Questions to Ask

If an insurance salesman or financial advisor brings up the subject of annuities, here are six questions you should ask right straight away:

  • What type of annuity is this, and why are you recommending it for me?
  • How much will I pay in the first year of the contract, and then how much in subsequent years?
  • What will be your first-year commission on the contract, and then what will you earn in subsequent years? (You want to understand the total costs, from ?mortality and expense? charges to the admin fees.)
  • Have I already maxed out my IRA, 401(k) and other tax-deferred vehicles?
  • Should I tie up my money with this annuity? Will I have ample liquidity outside of it if I do?
  • How is this insurer rated by AM Best, S&P, Moody?s and Fitch?

If you?re still considering annuities to secure income in retirement, make sure you weigh the potential benefits as well as the risks, and understand the complications of these saving vehicles before handing your money over.

Food Allergies - Symptoms | Revista Women's Health

An allergy can be described as a malfunction of the immune system, an exaggerated response to certain substances. Your body mistakenly believes that something it has touched, smelled or eaten is harmful to it and your body releases massive amounts of chemicals, such as histamine to protect itself.

It is believed that 11 million Americans suffer from food allergies. These allergies are as varied as food itself is. Some people suffer from an allergy to one food, some to many. The most common food allergies are generally eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts), fish, shellfish, soy and wheat.

Symptoms of food allergies are varied and range from a tingling of the mouth to swelling of the tongue and throat to difficulty breathing to hives, cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and in some instances death.

There are ways to help you or your loved one manage your food allergies. First seek the help of an allergist. Your allergist will perform a patch test to determine the exact cause of allergic reactions. This will be the guideline you use as you develop a diet based around your food allergies.

As with other types of allergies there is no cure for a food allergy. Some children do grow out of some food allergies as they age although allergies to peanuts, fish, shellfish and nuts are often considered lifetime allergies.

You or your loved one must simply avoid the food that causes the allergy. This can be difficult, especially when eating out in a restaurant. Depending on the severity of allergy, even slight cross contamination of food products can cause reactions.

Food labeling is a very important component of avoiding foods that trigger allergies. Since 2000 the FDA has been presenting information on allergy risks and labeling requirements to manufacturers. They seek to have manufacturers change some labels to be easier to read, using plain language like ?milk? on a label instead of ?caseinate?.

In the case of a milk or egg allergy there are alternatives that can be used when cooking or baking. There are many online sites dedicated to supplying information, education and support to those with food allergies.

Parkinson's disease itself does not increase risk of gambling, shopping addiction, study finds

Jan. 7, 2013 ? Parkinson's disease itself does not increase the risk of impulse control problems such as compulsive gambling and shopping that have been seen in people taking certain drugs for Parkinson's disease, according to new research published in the January 8, 2013, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"We've known for some time that these behaviors are more common in people taking certain Parkinson's medications, but we haven't known if the disease itself leads to an increased risk of these behaviors," said study author Daniel Weintraub, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

The study involved 168 people who had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and had not yet taken any medications for the disease. They were compared to 143 people of similar ages who did not have the disease.

The participants were given a questionnaire asking how often they had impulse control symptoms such as compulsive gambling, shopping, sexual behavior or eating. Participants were also asked about aimless wandering, punding (which is excessive repetition of non-goal directed activity, such as continual handling and sorting of common objects) and hobbyism (the compulsive pursuit of a hobby such as collecting, cleaning or excessive Internet use).

Those with Parkinson's disease were no more or less likely to have the impulse control symptoms than those without the disease, with about 20 percent of each group having symptoms.

"These results provide further evidence that impulse control disorders that occur in people with Parkinson's disease are related to the exposure to the dopamine-related drugs, not just the disease itself," Weintraub said. "More long-term studies are needed to determine if the 20 percent of people who have some symptoms of these disorders are more likely to develop impulse control disorders once they start treatment for Parkinson's."

The study was supported by the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative, a public-private partnership funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and funding partners including Abbott, Biogen Idec., F. Hoffman-La Roche Ltd., GE Healthcare, Genentech and Pfizer Inc.

Detective: Holmes bought movie ticket weeks before shooting

[Updated at 4:35 p.m. ET/2:35 p.m. MT]

CENTENNIAL, Colo.? Suspected mass murderer James Holmes purchased the movie tickets to the premier of ?The Dark Knight Rises? on July 8, 2012, almost two weeks before his alleged shooting rampage in the movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

That fact came from Det. Matthew Ingui, the first prosecution witness to testify in the afternoon session of Holmes' hearing.

Along with Det. Ingui?s testimony, the courtroom watched several minutes of video from a security surveillance camera showing Holmes coming inside the theater and hanging around for several minutes near the concession stand before entering Theater 9.

Holmes, who has not made a statement during the proceedings today, showed no outward emotion while the video was played for the court. But he however did watch closely as Det. Ingui used a Sharpie maker to write on a photo to illustrate where people died inside the Century 16 movie theater on July 20, 2012.

Det. Ingui said they were able to determine when Holmes bought the movie theater ticket from his cell phone, which he used at a kiosk inside the theater nearly 30 minutes before the first shots were fired.

The video also showed horrific scenes of masses of people running out of the theater?s front doors after the shots were fired at the premier of the Batman movie.

In the days after the rampage, Det. Ingui was a member of a team that collected live rounds of ammunition James Holmes left behind -- including 209 bullets for his assault rifle and 15 bullets for his handgun.

[Updated at 2:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. MT]

An Aurora police officer testified Monday morning that James Holmes didn't respond when he asked him behind the movie theater if accomplices helped him in the shooting rampage.

"He just looked at me and smiled," said police officer Justin Grizzle, recalling the moments after the arrest.

A prosecutor then pressed Officer Grizzle to define the expression.

"It was like a smirk," he said.

With Holmes in custody,? Officer Grizzle, a former paramedic, told the court that he then rushed into Theater 9, the scene of massacre.

"There were several bodies lying motionless," Officer Grizzle, who at times became emotional while on the stand. "I knew they needed to get to a hospital."

Instead of waiting for ambulances, Officer Grizzle said he decided to start transporting the critically wounded himself.

"I didn't want anybody else to die," Officer Grizzle tearfully testified.

With the help of other officers, Officer Grizzle personally took six victims to nearby ERs on four separate trips.

Some of the wounded were so bloodied, Grizzle said he couldn't recognize their race. On one trip, he had to yell at a man with a head wound to try and keep him alert.

"Don't f---ing die on me, don't f---ing die on me," Grizzle recalled for the court.

Many surviving victims or their family members in the courtroom wiped away tears. One woman shielded her face with a scarf. Another young lady collapsed into the arms of a man seated beside her.

When he was finally assuming the role of ambulance driver, Officer Grizzle described the horror scene inside his police cruiser.

"There was so much blood, I could hear it sloshing in the back of my car," he said.

[Updated 12:30 p.m. EST/10:30 p.m CST]

The first police officer to encounter alleged gunman James Holmes after the shooting massacre at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater initially thought he was a cop.

Aurora police officer Jason Oviatt said he thought the suspect was a member of law enforcement at the rear of the theater since he was wearing a military helmet and gas mask similar to what officers wear.

?When I first saw him, I thought he might be a police officer,? Oviatt said at a hearing for Holmes.

But Oviatt held him at gunpoint because he wasn?t acting like a police officer. Holmes was just standing at his white car with his hands on the roof, not doing anything.

?The overall picture didn?t match of him being a police officer as I got closer,? Oviatt said.

After the Aurora officer handcuffed Holmes, he noticed a handgun on the roof of the car where his hands had been, he said. And as he grabbed Holmes by the arm to take him away, a magazine of ammunition fell to the ground, Oviatt said in the hearing.

When Oviatt asked Holmes how many weapons he had, Holmes responded: four.

Then Holmes volunteered that he had an improvised explosive device at his home. When asked if it would explode, Oviatt said, ?The suspect replied, ?If you trip them.? ?

Oviatt said Holmes was compliant and answered all his questions. He described him as relaxed. ?In his case he was very, very relaxed,? Oviatt said. ?He seemed very detached from it all.?

Oviatt and fellow Aurora officer Aaron Blue identified Holmes as the man they arrested at the car.

Blue helped with the initial arrest, but then left to transport a victim who was shot in the head to the hospital.

Oviatt, upon cross examination by the defense, said he told officers at headquarters that Holmes was staring off in the distance and was not with it. ?He was dripping with sweat and he smelled badly,? Oviatt said of Holmes.

About 40 members of the media and six front rows of survivors, victims? families and friends listened intently to the morning proceedings.

[Updated at 8:30 a.m. ET/6:30 a.m. MT]

The biggest hearing thus far in the People of the State of Colorado v. James Eagan Holmes gets underway here Monday morning.

Anyone officially connected to the case has been under a gag order since Holmes was arrested in the July 20 movie theater massacre. All police reports, search warrants and other key records were ordered sealed.

This week's preliminary hearing will be the first public glimpse at the evidence prosecutors have against the man charged in the killing of 12 people and the wounding of 70 in the attack.

The hearing could last a week, as prosecutors outline particulars of their 166 counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. The district attorney has not publicly stated if the death penalty will be sought.

Holmes' attorneys may call witnesses to help lay the groundwork for a possible insanity defense.

At the end, District Judge William Sylvester will decide if there is ample evidence to move to trial.

Yahoo News will be at the hearing and will update this story during recesses throughout the day. No electronic devices or messaging is allowed from the courtroom.

NJ Dem: GOP's Christie may have 'prayed' for storm

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey's Democratic Senate leader says Republican Gov. Chris Christie may have "prayed" for Superstorm Sandy to hit because it has given him cover for his failed economic policies.

Senate President Stephen Sweeney says Christie's jobs plan before the late October storm was a disaster and now the reconstruction will provide an economic boost through thousands of construction jobs.

The storm killed people in 10 states but hit New York and New Jersey the hardest, flooding neighborhoods and destroying homes.

Sweeney said at a Monday press conference he guesses Christie "prayed a lot and got lucky because a storm came." The state's most powerful elected Democrat immediately apologized for his remark.

Republicans call Sweeney's comment "way out of line."

The South Jersey lawmaker also said at the event he's thinking about getting into the governor's race.

Step-By-Step Tips You Can Use For Home Improvement | New ...

TIP! A great way to improve your home is to actually improve your yard through different landscaping tweaks. The first thing visitors see is your front lawn, and a beautifully landscaped yard and a lush, green lawn can cause friends and neighbors to envy your home.

You have now entered the realm of home improvement. This world is full of various regulations, tools, and much more. When you?re able to customize your changes, you may feel overwhelmed. The following tips will be able to help you get started.

TIP! It is simple to not keep track of the time and overexert yourself in the heat. Staying hydrated is just as essential as safety equipment when it?s hot outside.

Look at home improvements as an investment, not a costly endeavor. When you purchase new appliances, you will automatically save electricity. Heating costs can be lowered through insulation and roof repairs. Make financial planning and looking ahead a constant habit.

TIP! A home with a nice view is usually slightly more valuable. There are some instances where the extra expense for a good view might not be worth it.

Give your septic tank regular care and maintenance. There are chemicals you can buy that will make things decompose faster and stop it from overflowing. Make sure that your home improvement projects do not incidentally mess up your septic tank. If necessary, find a detailed blueprint of your home and make sure you steer clear of costly errors.

TIP! Keep safety in mind when doing a home improvement job. Do not forget to shut of the gas when you are doing any work near a line.

Consider a wall mount for your TV. It frees up floor space if you remove the stand the TV previously sat on, or if you need the stand, it gives you some additional space. The best part is, if all the directions are followed closely, this could be accomplished in about a half hour.

TIP! Sealant strips and draft excluders are but two of your choices in preventing air flow escaping around your door frames. You put draft excluders under your door, and they help stop cold air from coming in and hot air from going out.

It?s time to pop those flooring bubbles! It?s simple to slice into these bubbles to let the air out. This part of the fix is only temporary, however. To mitigate the problem long-term, you will need to attach the section you just repaired to the floor with some fresh glue. In order to properly do this, you should use glue that comes already loaded inside a syringe.

TIP! Work on the most obvious areas when doing home improvements. Buyers will judge a home on visual appeal and may be deterred from buying if they notice something wrong.

There are so many different possibilities when it comes to improving your home. It is important, however, that you find a home improvement project that is suitable for your home?s unique features. Hopefully, these tips have given you a starting point for your own home.

Ok underdeveloped and a Mary Jane character can be pretty much the same thing but I feel an underdeveloped character is easier to fix than a Mary Jane. Basically a Mary Jane is a common character type. She is beautiful, kind, and good at everything. This also applies to strong, handsome, athletic guys too. Basically a person with no faults and very little personality.

While underdeveloped is similar it really means that you could have an interesting start like- A normal average guy who is good at math and a little shy. This type has a plus and a minus but there is so much about the character that we don't know. Each small part of the character has an impact and the more you know about your character the easier it will be to play that character in a realistic and believable way. The better your character, the more others will appreciate your rping skills and want to rp with you again.

The last group is very similar to a mary Jane type character but so ridiculously overpowered and perfect that they overwhelm everyone and anything in the rp. You have to keep abilities and such in check and not pop in with a new awesome ability whenever your character is threatened. Make a detailed character and list of abilities that are well rounded and fit with the rp and stick with it.

Another great tool I found recently came from the rpg "Seventh Sea". I edited it a bit but basically it was a list of twenty questions you could ask to figure out who your character is.
Here they are
1-Where is your character from? Country, city/town/rural
2- How would you physically describe your character? Include gender, height, weight, eye color, hair color body type other traits.
3-Does you character have any recurring mannerisms? Namely habits, tics, affectations of speech.
4-What is your characters Main motivation? The reason they do what they do. Their goal in life.
5-What is their greatest strength? Greatest weakness?
6-What is their most and least favorite thing?
7-What is their psychology? Personality, way of thinking.
8-What is their greatest Fear?
9-What is their greatest love? What do they want people to say about them after they die? If they lived forever what would they spend their time doing?
10-What is their opinion about their country or place of origin?
11- What are their prejudices?
12-Loyalty?
13-Are they in love? Married? Betrothed?
14-What is the hero's family like? Who are they and what do they do?
15-How would the Hero's parents describe them? Answer for both mother then father. If one or both is dead answer in the voice of the main caregiver or someone who knows them well.
16-Does you hero follow the code of chivalry? Their word is their bond, they rescue damsels in distress, help the weak...
17-How religious is your Hero? What "God" or religion do they follow?
18-Are they a member of a guild, club, or secret society?
19-What does your hero think of magic?
20- If you could, what advice would you give you

If anyone has anything to add or would like help with their character I would love to help. I hope others found these questions and tips as helpful as I did.
