DETROIT (AP) ? A Michigan State University student's Jewish religion was not a factor in an assault at an off-campus party, police said Wednesday, a day after the 19-year-old man claimed he was popped in the jaw as a victim of "religious hatred."

There is no dispute that Zach Tennen was seriously injured early Sunday. But witnesses interviewed by detectives have not confirmed Tennen's account that he was attacked after revealing he's Jewish, East Lansing police Capt. Jeff Murphy said.

Police also have no evidence that Tennen's mouth was stapled as he maintains, Murphy said.

"There's a lot more to it than what is on the surface," he told The Associated Press.

"This came out early as being reported as a hate crime. It now appears after we've talked to many people who were at this party ? and most importantly two witnesses who saw the actual assault ? it doesn't appear that religion was the reason he was assaulted," Murphy said.

Tennen, who is from Franklin in suburban Detroit, is recovering from jaw surgery. His father, Bruce Tennen, said the police department's latest "assertions sicken us."

Tennen was punched while in the front yard of an East Lansing home while 40 people partied in the backyard. Murphy said two people immediately helped him, put frozen vegetables on his face and got him a cab so he could go to a hospital.

The Michigan State sophomore said he was punched and had his mouth stapled after telling two men that he's Jewish. In a statement Tuesday, Tennen said, "It's shameful that in 21st century America, such religious hatred exists in our country."

Murphy said Tennen felt a wire in his mouth that he believed was a staple.

"We haven't found anything about staples. ... This was one punch to the mouth," the police captain said.

Murphy said he couldn't disclose many details about the investigation, but an 18-year-old man from Farmington Hills is a suspect. No one has been arrested.

Police are not trying to discredit Tennen, said Murphy, adding: "He definitely did not deserve to be assaulted."

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Researchers at RTI International have developed a new solar technology that could make solar energy more affordable, and thus speed-up its market adoption.

The RTI solar cells are formed from solutions of semiconductor particles, known as colloidal quantum dots, and can have a power conversion efficiency that is competitive to traditional cells at a fraction of the cost.

Solar energy has the potential to be a renewable, carbon-neutral source of electricity but the high cost of photovoltaics -- the devices that convert sunlight into electricity -- has slowed widespread adoption of this resource.

The RTI-developed solar cells were created using low-cost materials and processing techniques that reduce the primary costs of photovoltaic production, including materials, capital infrastructure and energy associated with manufacturing.

Preliminary analysis of the material costs of the technology show that it can be produced for less than $20 per square meter -- as much as 75 percent less than traditional solar cells.

"Solar energy currently represents less than 1 percent of percent of the global energy supply, and substantial reductions in material and production costs of photovoltaics are necessary to increase the use of solar power," said Ethan Klem, a research scientist at RTI and co-principal investigator of the project. "This technology addresses each of the major cost drivers of photovoltaics and could go a long way in helping achieve that goal."

The technology was recently featured in a paper published in Applied Physics Letters.

In demonstration tests, the cells consistently provided a power conversion efficiency more than 5 percent, which is comparable to other emerging photovoltaic technologies.

"The efficiency of these devices is primarily limited by the amount of sunlight that is absorbed," said Jay Lewis, a senior research scientist at RTI and the project's other principal investigator. "There are many well-known techniques to enhance absorption, which suggests that the performance can increase substantially."

The cells, which are composed of lightweight, flexible layers, have the potential to be manufactured using high volume roll-to-roll processing and inexpensive coating processes, which reduces capital costs and increases production. Unlike traditional solar cells, the RTI-developed cells can be processed at room temperature, further reducing input energy requirements and cost.

In addition to being low-cost, the new cells have several other key benefits, including higher infrared sensitivity, which allows the cells to utilize more of the available solar spectrum for power generation.

* Reince Priebus echoed Romney's attacks, stating, "It's clear President Obama's approach to getting America working again is failing miserably as record numbers of people are on welfare," according to politicspa.com.

* Health and Human Services Secretary Katherine Sebelius defended the reform as a way for states to spur innovation, according to the Seattle Times. She went on to say that waivers would be granted to states that make "clear progress" toward moving at least 20 percent more people from welfare to work.

Nigerian military forces stormed the hideout of a militant gang operating on the waters of oil-producing Cross River State and rescued 27 abducted oil workers, a navy spokesman said Sunday.

"It was a joint military operation involving the navy and the army. Twenty-seven oil workers were rescued on Friday, while one is still missing," Lt. Commander Ajibola Olabisi told AFP.

He said 28 workers of Sinopec, an oil-servicing company, had been kidnapped on Thursday in Ikang near the state capital Calabar by an armed gang called the Lactop Marine Force.

Olabisi said members of the gang had been terrorising residents of the area for a long time before the troops moved in to dislodge them.

"The criminals fled as soon as our men stormed their hideout. Nobody was either killed or injured during the operation," he said, adding that the military were on the trail of the kidnappers.

For several years, Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta was hit by militant attacks until a 2009 amnesty deal sharply reduced unrest in the region.

The militants that operated there were notorious for kidnapping foreign and local oil workers for ransom. Despite the amnesty, sporadic incidents continue to occur.

Unrest in the region had curbed oil production in Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer and the world's eighth largest, to less than one million barrels per day, but output has recovered since the amnesty to more than two million barrels.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's foreign minister wants Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran and Egypt to meet for talks to work out how to end the Syrian crisis, Egyptian officials said on Sunday, a meeting that would include a regional ally as well as opponents of Damascus.

Iran backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose army and air force have been fighting rebels for 17 months, and Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt - under new president, Mohamed Mursi - have all called for an end to Assad's rule.

Mursi put forward the plan at an Islamic conference in Saudi Arabia earlier this month. This week, he travels to China and then to Iran for a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, a group of 120 developing nations.

"We are currently conducting a series of discussions to explore the possibility of holding such a meeting and the expected outcome," Amr Roshdy, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman told Reuters, about the plans for four-way talks.

He did not say when any such meeting would take place.

"We already contacted Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran," he said, referring to telephone talks between Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and officials in the three other countries.

Egyptian presidential spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters that setting up such a group would bring together nations which have "real influence" and described Iran as "part of the solution, not part of the problem".

A Turkish official said Ankara welcomed the idea, a position echoed by an Iranian Foreign Ministry official.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran had "its own views about the political process in Syria" which it would put forward during any such gathering, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"We see any foreign intervention, terrorist actions and armed movements as against the wishes of the people of Syria and we believe these foreign interventions are aimed at eliminating the chance to achieve reforms," he said.

Mursi's trip to Iran will be the first by an Egyptian president since the 1979 Iranian revolution. The two nations do not have diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level, but have missions staffed by diplomats in each others' countries.

The Egyptian presidential spokesman said the trip to Tehran would last only a few hours. Western diplomats said they would be watching to see whether Mursi used the platform to press for support for change in Syria.

Egypt is currently chair of the Non-Aligned Movement and that position will pass to Iran at the Tehran meeting.

Team Strengths:

Vance McDonald and Luke Wilson are both terrific tight ends. You?d be hard pressed to find a better pair of tight ends anywhere in the country. McDonald was the team?s leading receiver last year, and Wilson is a two-sport standout who has really impressed in offseason workouts. Look for the Owls to be throwing it down the middle a lot this year.

Rice has some real star power on defense. Cameron Nwosu piled up 108 tackles to lead the Owls last year. Nwosu is the hardest worker on the team, and he has a motor that never quits on the football field. Bryce Callahan had a sensational freshman season at cornerback for Rice last year, and he should be one of the best corners in the conference this year.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line is a big area of concern. Rice was just 74^th in the nation in sacks last year, and that was with pass rushing specialist Scott Solomon on the line. Solomon graduated and the Owls don?t have anyone else who looks like a strong pass rusher. In addition, the Owls lack a powerful interior presence to clog the running lanes. Opponents gashed this defense on the ground numerous times last year.

The Owls offensive line must replace five seniors who combined for 150 starts. Rice believes they have some very talented youngsters ready to step in, but this much inexperience on the line is certainly worrisome.

Taylor McHargue is the only player on the roster with any starting experience at quarterback. McHargue started last year under center, before being benched because of poor play. He?ll have to be better this year, because the team really doesn?t have another option this time around.

2012-2013 Rice Owls Football Prediction: 5-7

Rice should be a better team than they were last season, but how much better? The Owls certainly have a chance to get to six wins or more and become bowl eligible, but the defense must get better. Rice allowed more than 30 points in half their games last season. The question marks on the offensive side are a concern as well. Overall, Rice has some star power; but the team lacks depth.

I?ll pick the Owls to finish with five wins in 2012, but it won?t surprise me if they get to .500. Slowly but surely things are improving at Rice.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Just as Republicans are preparing for their convention next week, so are the protesters.

And just like the Republicans are making contingency plans in case Tropical Storm Isaac brings heavy rain and wind to Tampa, the protesters are making plans of their own.

On Friday, a small group of demonstrators at an encampment west of downtown said the rain might curtail their numbers and the ability to carry giant, papier-mache political puppets, large signs and other props. All are virtually guaranteed to fall apart in the rain and wind that is expected to hit Tampa on Monday, the first day of the convention.

However, that doesn't mean Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan won't have crowds of demonstrators outside. Groups including Code Pink, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the AFL-CIO union and Planned Parenthood have already started arriving, regardless of the forecast. And die-hards have vowed to move ahead with their plans, rain or shine.

"We're no longer really considering indoor options. Some regular rain and wind won't stop us. They would have to be unsafe conditions to make us consider changing the plans," said Michael Long, of the Florida Consumer Action Network, which is organizing a protest for Sunday evening as the RNC holds its kickoff party at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

By mid-day Friday, it appeared that Isaac was tracking away from Florida's west coast and the Republican National Convention. It was forecast to pass the lower Florida Keys late Sunday night, then head northwest into the Gulf of Mexico. Meteorologists say that it could make landfall on Tuesday evening somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and southeastern Louisiana ? although officials stress that the forecast is still unpredictable and that everyone from political delegates to full-time Gulf Coast residents should be prepared.

Florida officials have activated the state's Emergency Operations Center in response to Isaac. Still, Gov. Rick Scott said the event should proceed as planned.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said a decision was made long ago to hold the presidential nominating roll call on Monday night, rather than later. That had nothing to do with the weather ? party leaders wanted "to get all our business done in one shot ... so we can keep plowing ahead on telling the Mitt Romney story" on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, he said.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said law enforcement will have a better grasp on how to deploy resources for the storm by Saturday or Sunday. She said that even if the storm brings only heavy rains to the city, "it may reduce the number of protesters."

"On the upside, it may also cool things down," she said. "The heat is one of our biggest worries."

Delegates will be inside or in air-conditioned shuttles ? and most aren't that concerned with the protests.

Storm or no storm, New Hampshire delegate Phyllis Woods said the protests will be a minor distraction at most.

"We are not worried about the protesters," Woods said. "It's not even a blip on the radar screen for most of us."

Inclement weather may mean the protesters will be a younger, healthier crowd: Heavy winds, rain and even light street flooding could make things difficult for the elderly and disabled. And as Nathan Pim noted during a puppet-making workshop Friday under sunny skies in Tampa, soaked props could be rendered worthless. Nonetheless, Pim seemed undeterred.

"I could already see there being less people, but I think there's a lot of people who are determined to make a statement," said Pim, who is from Cape Coral, Fla.

Jared Hamil, with the Coalition to March on the RNC, said one of the week's largest planned events will take place on Monday afternoon.

"Rain or shine, we're still going to be there," he said. "The only thing that's going to change is perhaps how we dress. We'll be wearing ponchos and galoshes. We're still going to march."
