The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG convertible roadster debuts at this year?s New York Auto Show and completes the SL-Class trinity, which includes the Mercedes-Benz SL550 and Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG.
Like its siblings, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG went through the Biggest Loser wringer, shedding more than 250 pounds through the generous use of aluminum and carbon fiber in its construction. Mercedes wrung an additional 17 horsepower from the SL65 AMG?s formidable 6.0-liter V-12 twin-turbo engine, which now generates a total of 621 horsepower. Mercedes has not yet released fuel economy figures on the 2013 SL65 AMG, but the lighter weight, new seven-speed automatic transmission, and fuel-saving technologies like ECO stop/start, will probably add one to two ticks to the previous generation SL65 AMG?s EPA-estimated 12 mpg city and 18 mpg highway figures.
The changes also give the 2013 Mercedes SL65 AMG maximum speed that?s limited to 186 mph, and more importantly, the convertible bolts from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds.
Compared to the rest of the lineup, there are few exterior and interior changes on the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. The 2013 SL65 AMG will showcase the new AMG ?face? which includes a revamped grill and lower air intake. Inside, Mercedes redesigned the SL65 AMG?s dash and center stack, borrowing styling cues from the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG sports car. The SL65 AMG, like its brethren, is equipped with a host of standard technological features including Active Blind Spot Assist, Attention Assist, and a superb surround sound system from Bang Olufsen.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG goes on sale in November, following the SLS550 (May) and SL63 AMG (July). Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce pricing on the SL65 AMG.
