SumspixTristan, a horse saved at auction by Horse Rescue United, shared a paddock with Standardbreds who used to race and others ready to be adopted by kind families.

Cats, dogs, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, fish, horses, pet birds, rats, mice. Pick a pet. Although these 12 creatures are listed as pets by the Humane Society of the US, there?s not much information out there about most of them after cats and dogs.

Tiny to large, furry or finny, tame or not, popular or . .
.strange. It would be interesting to know more about pet rats or mice. For
instance, do those who fancy them have other pets too (probably not cats)?

In the fish department, are ?pet fish? more often tropical
or not? Do koi count as pets if they live in outdoor pools? And if not, what
makes an indoor fish a pet? How many
of the pet birds are solitary and how many share a cage?

Horses ? their size alone makes ?pets? seem like the wrong word
to describe them.

And finally, are there still other pets out there besides the animals in these 12 categories?

A show to go . . . to

For readers whose love for their pets of all kinds carries
over to animals of all kinds, an exhibition in Manhattan may be just the thing for a spring
day trip. The Morgan Library Museum (225?Madison Ave, at 36^th St, New York City; themorgan.org) is the
destination and ?In the Company of Animals: Art, Literature, and Music at the
Morgan? is what to see.

Enthusiastically reviewed in the New York Times earlier this month, the show is about animals, their interactions with humans and how
humans have perceived and written about animals. In many cases, the works on
view will probably be familiar. They range from Argos, Odysseus?s faithful old dog to Snoopy,
of ?Peanuts? fame, and from Barbar the elephant to ?The Raven? of Edgar Allan
Poe.

Besides two-dimensional images of animals, the things you
can see in the exhibition include a children?s board game; a cylinder seal from
the fourth millennium B.C.; a first edition of Orwell?s Animal Farm; and music scores that like everything else here, have
to do with humans and animals.

The exhibition ? ?In the Company of Animals: Art, Literature
and Music at the Morgan? ? runs through May 20.

New home for deserving
pets

Ewing
Township?s new animal
shelter opens Saturday, March 31, and a grand opening is planned onsite to mark
the event. Scheduled for noon, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will include introductions
of Virginia Preesado, Ewing?s new health
officer; the township?s animal control officers; and the three shelter staffers
who have moved with the animals to their new home.

Festivities will run from 12-4 pm that day (rain date:
Sunday, April 1), behind the Ewing
Municipal Building
on Jake Garzio Drive.
Activities will include shelter tours and adoptions. Representatives of the businesses,
organizations and friends of the shelter who have helped over the years will
staff tables around the area.

Members of the EASEL Animal Rescue League, which helps with
adoptions, will be on hand.

The public is invited ? and that includes well-behaved pets
on leash.
