Memo: Train operators can't sleep on the job

By WHDH.com

BOSTON -- The MBTA put out a memo to its staff that to many, would seem like common sense: Don?t fall asleep on the job.

?Oh my goodness, no that?s very surprising. It?s a little nerve-wracking actually to hear that. I would hope my train conductor is not falling asleep at the wheel,? said a concerned MBTA rider.

The memo was posted near all Green Line terminals. An MBTA spokesperson said it was not uncommon for managers to put out reminders to workers to make sure they follow the rules.

?Green Line managers felt there was a need to stress the seriousness of paying attention to duty at all times and avoiding distractions,? said the spokesperson.

They would not discuss what events prompted the reminder but riders were concerned.

?That?s pretty serious, especially with the Green Line where there?s so much surface traffic, pretty alarming,? said an MBTA rider.

Distracted MBTA operators have been an issue in the past.

Last March, a Green Line train operator was caught on camera polishing her nails during the morning rush. While she was not driving the train at the time, the MBTA has a zero tolerance policy for operators who are distracted and suspended the operator.

Some MBTA riders said they still feel safe.

?Fingers crossed it?s not an issue I think, I trust them,? said a rider.

The signs were not visible to the public.

An MBTA spokesperson said any signs that have been put up are in employee-only areas.
