Video Conferencing ? Connecting Remote Australia to Promote ...

Geographically one of the largest countries in world, Australia is steadily relying on video conferencing solutions to overcome the geographical distance that hinders growth rate of health and education services in the country. Many government authorities based in the nation are looking towards this conferencing solution in order to maintain coordination between their headquarters and remotely located branches. Video-based collaboration provides them with the best means to maintain constant face to face contact with personnel based across the country and set up multipoint conferences at the click of a button.

In the education sector, video conferencing has emerged as the best tool to impart a reliable and superior remote training experience to teachers as well as learners. Even the national government realises this and has included it in the project designed to enhance the usage of social computing for teaching.

With this type of virtual meeting solution, teachers ?can foster an environment that is suitable for face to face communication with their students without ever travelling, thereby eliminating the associated time and costs. However, the rate of adoption of video conferencing lags in the remote education domain primarily due to poor video quality.

In order to tackle the issue of choppy or unclear visuals in remote learning sessions, education agencies in Australia can opt for an enterprise grade solution that can be tailored to suit their individual requirements. ArkadinVideo is an advanced solution that can deliver High Definition or HD video throughout the session without any lag and, thus, maintains high quality standards.

This way, the solution helps teachers bring the three critical aims of education into effect, namely raising awareness, sharing the progress levels of planning student learning and sharing case studies of individual schools. These three ?events? have been defined in the remote education initiative that is backed by the National Centre for Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR).

Likewise, organisations that aim to deliver high quality health services in rural and remote Australia can also benefit from integrated video conferencing solutions. Such agencies can deploy the solution in order to showcase rural and remote allied health leadership over a service delivery model to the workforce. Moreover, the authorities can update the healthcare personnel about any recent developments related to their fields and continue their education through video-based multipoint remote communication channels. They can also conduct regular training sessions for the geographically dispersed healthcare workforce that are hosted by industry leaders in order to present their researches and findings to a large audience in real-time.

For education as well as health sectors, high end, browser based integrated video conferencing solutions provide the best platform to share unique case studies whose results can be applied on a wide scale in the least possible time frame. This way, a viable solution becomes widely applicable and turnaround time can be improved significantly. Moreover, inputs of various remotely located educators or healthcare professionals based at the grassroot level can be taken in real-time to make mission critical decisions. Therefore, a reliable video conferencing service in Australia can benefit the public and private health and education agencies successfully reach to a remotely located demographic.

Mind games of the victorious

NEW YORK (Reuters) - For decades after the first sports psychology lab was established in 1920 in Germany, mental coaches have been the water boys of sports science, viewed by their colleagues as not quite good enough to make the first-string team.

That has changed. Virtually every top professional team and elite athlete has a psychologist on speed dial for help conquering the yips - when stress makes crucial muscles jerk and ruins, say, an archery shot - marshal the power of visualization, or just muster the confidence that can mean the difference between medaling or just muddling through.

But a more important reason for the improved reputation of sports psychology is the solid science demonstrating the effect of the mental game on athletic performance.

A 2011 study, for instance, examined U.S. National Basketball Association players' free throws. Their success rate is 6 to 9 percentage points lower when their team trails by a point or two with 15 seconds or less left on the clock. Researchers at Oregon State University reported the findings in the Journal of Sports Economics.

When free throws can mean the difference between a win and a loss - that is, when it's clutch time - the resulting stress makes many players choke.

But the power of the mind is sufficiently great that it can even trump reality.

Scientists have known since the 1990s that athletes who look at a target without moving their eyes have better success making soccer penalty kicks, basketball free throws, golf putts and other challenges where aim is crucial. But why does "quiet eye," as it's called, help?

One idea was that by keeping the gaze fixed on the target the athlete could better ignore distractions. But scientists led by Purdue University's Jessica Witt, a psychology professor and 2005 Ultimate Frisbee team gold medalist, had a different hunch. They asked whether quiet eye changes how a target looks: objects seen in the center of the eye, called the fovea, appear larger than those seen in peripheral vision. Could that improve aim?

For a 2012 study, Witt and her colleagues made golf holes seem bigger by projecting five large or 11 small circles around them, creating what's called the Ebbinghaus illusion: see graphic.

In this illusion, large circles make a target look smaller and small circles make it look larger. Volunteers sank more putts when the hole looked larger, Witt's team reported in the journal Psychological Science. The most likely explanation: believing the target was larger increased people's confidence in their skill, which improves performance.

LUCKY CHARMS

Confidence also seems to explain the power of sports superstitions, from lucky underwear to game-day rituals.

To test the power of superstitions, scientists led by Lysann Damisch of the University of Cologne in Germany ran several experiments. In one, they gave participants either a "lucky ball" or an ordinary one before they tried to sink a golf putt. In another, they had people bring their own lucky charms. The researchers let half of them keep the rabbits feet and the like, but confiscated the rest.

Superstition triumphed in both cases. People given a "lucky ball" sank more putts than those with an ordinary one, and performed much better if they kept their lucky charms than did people whose talismans were confiscated, the scientists reported in 2010 in Psychological Science.

How does superstition work? The scientists found that people who thought that luck was smiling on them felt more confident and competent. That inspired them to try harder and keep at it.

Which is not to say athletes can talk themselves into better performance with any old mantra. Nearly three dozen studies have analyzed sports "self-talk," in which athletes tell themselves variants of "I've got this!" or "I can beat this guy!" But not all of it, found sports psychologist Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis of the University of Thessaly in Greece and colleagues.

In general, self-talk worked better for fine motor movements such as those involving the fingers, as in archery, rather than for gross motor skills using the large muscles of the legs and arms, as in track. And what the scientists call "instructional self-talk" was more effective than "motivational self-talk": "raise the elbow," "keep the head down," or "follow through" rather than pep talk like "I can do it!"

The reason, they suggested in a 2011 paper in Perspectives on Psychological Science, is that instructional self-talk can sharpen focus on, say, what that elbow is supposed to be doing in archery. It can increase confidence - "I know what movements are crucial to nail this" - and trigger the automatic brain program that executes the task.

The more an athlete can off-load that brain program to automatic rather than conscious circuits, the better the performance.

Other scientists, have found that benching part of the brain can sharpen performance. Recreational athletes who practiced bench presses hoisted a couple of kilograms more when they were blindfolded, found kinesiologist Ali Boolani of the University of Georgia. "When you're not seeing, your proprioception," or sense of where each part of your body is in space, "improves," he said. That seems to allow weight-lifters to position their hands and arms in a way that maximizes lift.

Boolani has also found that when athletes listen to music they like, their performance improved, whether they were shooting baskets, hitting baseballs or competing in track events.

"We think it's because of dissociation," he said. "If you don't think so much about what you're doing, which happens when you're listening to music, muscle memory takes over."

For all the importance of mind games, it seems, less thinking can be better than more.

LONDON (AP) ? The London Olympics opening ceremony will be a grand spectacle ? but will it be a surprise?

In a word, no.

Director Danny Boyle wants the details to stay secret and games chief Sebastian Coe has pleaded for insiders to stop leaking details of the extravaganza. But in the age of camera phones and social media, with 10,000 performers in the ceremony, thousands of Olympic security and staff and more than 10,000 journalists already at the Olympic Park, not much can be kept out of the public domain.

"Part of the modern world means you can't really do that," Boyle acknowledged about keeping secrets as he showed journalists a mock-up of the set for the opening scene of the ceremony, weeks before the event.

So, a spoiler alert: Stop reading now if you want Friday's opening ceremony to be a surprise. Stop, stop, stop.

But if you are as irresistibly curious as the rest of us, well, prepare for everything from James Bond to Lord Voldemort to a spoonful of sugar.

Boyle has revealed only selected details about the show, But since the performers started rehearsals in June at the Olympic Stadium ? and an army of journalists started arriving to cover the July 27-Aug. 12 games ? a trickle of details about the 27 million pound ($42 million) opening ceremony has become a torrent.

The leaks became too much for Coe, who tweeted: "Share the frustration of volunteer performers and the public at Opening Ceremony being unofficially trailed. Let's (hash)savethesurprise."

His imploring hashtag fell on deaf ears. Still more information emerged.

So what do we know?

The ceremony's theme is "Isles of Wonder," inspired by William Shakespeare's play about shipwrecked castaways, "The Tempest." An actor is due to recite Caliban's speech, the one that runs "Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises." Mark Rylance, who had been due to perform the lines, pulled out after the death of his stepdaughter. Kenneth Branagh is rumored to be his replacement.

Despite Boyle's enchanted-island inspiration, few expect the man who depicted Scottish heroin addicts in "Trainspotting" and Indian slum dwellers in "Slumdog Millionaire" to deliver a sanitized image of Britain.

It sounds more like Isles of Wonder and Woe ? with a big dash of British whimsy thrown in.

Boyle has said the show is "trying to show the best of us, but we're also trying to show many, many different things about our country."

The ceremony will open at 9 p.m. with the sound of a 27-ton bell ? the largest harmonically tuned bell in the world ? forged at London's 442-year-old Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which made London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell.

A prerecorded segment has been filmed inside Buckingham Palace, reportedly involving Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig as secret agent James Bond. If rumor is to be believed, a stuntman dressed as 007 will parachute into the stadium to start the show.

The opening sequence will evoke a pastoral idyll, the "green and pleasant land" described in William Blake's poem "Jerusalem," which has been set to music and is regarded as England's unofficial national anthem. There's a meadow, livestock, a farmer plowing his field, a cricket match ? and, in a nod to Britain's plethora of rural summer music festivals, a mosh pit.

Boyle hasn't disclosed what comes next, but has said the ceremony will depict Britain's past, present and future for a global television audience estimated at 1 billion. In addition to the athletes and performers, some 60,000 spectators will be in the stadium, including political leaders from around the world. U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters and a sprinkling of European and celebrity royalty will be among those attending.

Aerial photographs of the set for the second section of the show depict dark buildings and smokestacks with the River Thames running through it. This is the other side of the country described in "Jerusalem" ? a land of "dark satanic mills."

A third act will tackle the regeneration of east London, where the Olympics are taking place, as parkland and a creative heartland, home to many artists, designers and Internet startups.

There will be vignettes drawing on British history ? Boyle's people-power version of it ? including Depression-era jobless protesters and nurses performing a tribute to the National Health Service, founded in 1948 to provide free health care for all Britons and now a much fought-over national institution.

Performers dressed as miners and factory workers have also been seen going into the stadium, and one set piece is a model of the Empire Windrush, a ship that brought hundreds of Caribbean migrants to Britain in 1948.

According to the Sunday Times, one section will feature characters from children's fiction classics including "Alice in Wonderland" and "Peter Pan" ? and a showdown between Voldemort, the villain of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books, and a horde of flying magical nannies based on Mary Poppins.

Boyle has stressed that the ceremony is not a concert ? "the real stars are the athletes" ? but music will play a key role, with musical direction by electronic duo Underworld, who have worked with Boyle since his 1996 movie "Trainspotting."

Music heard coming from the stadium in recent days ranges from "Jerusalem" ? of course ? to songs by The Beatles, The Who, the Sex Pistols, and Vangelis' theme from "Chariots of Fire."

There are also songs by newer acts, including Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah, two homegrown stars forged in the gritty London environment that Boyle is celebrating.

The final act will be former Beatle Paul McCartney ? due to lead the audience in a sing-along of "Hey Jude," with thousands of voices urging "take a sad song and make it better."

Final touches are still being put on the show, with a technical rehearsal scheduled for Monday evening and a final dress rehearsal on Wednesday. Boyle has already cut a stunt bike sequence to try to keep the show to its allotted three-hour running time so everyone can use public transport to get home.

Boyle's spectacle is only part of the Summer Games opening ceremony, much of which is dictated by Olympic protocol.

There also will be a parade of athletes from the more than 200 participating nations, speeches by dignitaries ? including the queen, who will officially declare the games open ? and of course the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

The identity of the torchbearer who will ignite the cauldron it is the most closely guarded secret of all ? and so far, that has not leaked.

HCF Comic Review ? White Devil #1 ? Horror Cult Films - Movie ...

Written by Matt Evans & Andrew Helinski

Art by Nate Burns

Reviewed by Juanvasquez

?

Set in the small backwoods town of Wetumpka, Alabama, where literally nothing ever happens, White Devil follows bored home maker Judy Harper. Judy leads a routine life, with mundane housewife duties such as the usual cooking, cleaning and shopping. We?re introduced to her, with her musing upon her current situation and the advice she was given by her mother when she was younger. Her only means of escape is the book club she attends with her friend, Betty. Or at least that?s what she leads her family to believe.?What starts out as domestic tedium soon takes a surprising turn, as Judy?s book club isn?t that at all, and she is in fact meeting up some of the townsfolk in the middle of the woods, in some kind of?Satanist?cult, requiring its members to attend in their birthday suits.

Despite the comic?s title and cover image, these things are soon forgotten as you get involved in Judy?s story, and her home life, with the interactions with her husband and children. She?s a woman who seems to have had the life sucked out of her, until she?s given the exciting prospect of doing something different with the cult. It?s an involving story that seems to suck you in from the first frame (despite some of the text being a little difficult to read in its PDF format), and one that soon takes a turn towards the macabre. It?s definitely a story for the more mature reader, with strong images of animal sacrifice and ritualistic sex and nudity. Evans and Helsinki?s writing and story work is structured extremely well and really gives an insight into how the?protagonists mind works, coupled with some fantastic art work.

The art itself is very well drawn and finely detailed. There are a few interesting moments where every now and then what you?re looking at?changes from what we?re following in the story, to some kind of religious imagery, be it that of a crucifix, or some sort of demon. The style and layout of the comic is somewhat unique (in contrast to a lot of others I?ve read) in some places, particularly in scenes where Judy is seemingly alone with her thoughts. Nate Burns? art style is something special, with each frame filled with as much care and attention as the next.

While the first issue of White Devil sets things up in a stunning fashion, the manner in which the story is rolled out is in such a way that the reader is almost none the wiser to what?s going to happen next as when starting the comic. It?s an intriguing tale of the occult, set in a small town, and with the cliff hanger at the end, like all good comics, you can?t wait to dive straight into the next issue. White Devil #1 is the first a run of 4 issues, and frankly, issue 2 cannot come quickly enough.
