Anti-racism group launch app to curb football abuse

Posted on Jul 30
Chelsea's Frank Lampard waits to take a free kick during a Premeirship match against Fulham in London, September 23, 2006. Football anti-racism group Kick It Out launched a new mobile phone tool for fans and players to report racist or homophobic abuse, after a number of high-profile incidents last season.

Football anti-racism group Kick It Out on Monday launched a new mobile phone tool for fans and players to report racist or homophobic abuse, after a number of high-profile incidents last season.

The mobile phone application will allow fans and players to report abuse directly to Kick It Out, which will follow up the cases with the football authorities and, if necessary, the police.

"Part of the problems that were raised last season were players saying they had complained about an incident and nothing was done about it," said the organisation's chairman Herman Ouseley.

"Some of them never even found out about the outcome of their complaint, especially if it was not found in their favour because we had not been involved.

"Now if players have got a problem they will be able to contact us directly and, if they wish, anonymously, and we will follow through on the complaint.

"Fans will also be able to contact us if for some reason they don't feel the confidence to report something to a steward."

English football has been marred by incidents of racism on and off the pitch over the last two years, with the John Terry and Luis Suarez cases provoking criticism of Kick It Out's response by some players.

Ouseley hopes the new season of action will prompt clubs to take the fight against discrimination more seriously, rather than paying lip service to the battle against racism during the organisation's traditional two-week advertising campaign.

"We felt the old format was stale," he added.

"Clubs need to show they are being much more inclusive and reaching out to fans to show they are embracing everyone, and taking the responsibility for educating everyone - players, supporters and employees.

"If an incident does happen then clubs need to take responsibility and not blame someone else."

At least six killed in new Cairo violence

CAIRO (Reuters) - Six people were killed in Cairo on Tuesday in violence between supporters and opponents of deposed President Mohamed Mursi, state-run media reported.

The violence broke out before dawn near a Brotherhood protest at Cairo University, where Mursi supporters have been camped out since the army removed the Islamist politician from power on July 3 following protests against his rule.

The Brotherhood described it as an attack on peaceful protesters. Police sources said hundreds of Mursi supporters clashed with local residents, street vendors and others near the sit-in. They said gunshots were fired and stones were thrown.

The state-run Al-Ahram newspaper quoted a health ministry official as saying six people had been killed and a further 33 people were injured. It brings to nine the number of people killed in political violence in the last two days.

About 100 people have died in violence since the army deposed Mursi and replaced him with an interim administration led by the Adli Mansour, the head of the constitutional court. The Brotherhood accuses the army of orchestrating a coup.

The Brotherhood said on its website a total of seven "martyrs" had been killed overnight in two separate attacks on Mursi supporters, one at Cairo University and another on a march near a bigger sit-in in the north of the city.

The Brotherhood says it will maintain the sit-in until Mursi, held by the army in an unknown location since his overthrow, is reinstated.

"Leaders of the military coup continue to terrorize the peaceful protesters in Egypt," the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said in a statement.

Some residents close to the Brotherhood's main protest area in Nasr City have filed a complaint with the public prosecutor asking for the removal of the protesters. A security source said the case is expected to be taken to a court and ruled upon soon "to give the army a legal basis to end the protests".

The National Salvation Front, an alliance of liberal and leftist parties that supported Mursi's removal from power, condemned what it described as attacks by Brotherhood supporters on protesters over the last three weeks.

Braves 1B Freeman's All-Star status in question

ATLANTA (AP) - Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman has a thumb injury that is preventing him from playing Sunday and leaves his status for the All-Star game in question.

Freeman said Sunday he jammed his left thumb on the first play of Saturday night's 5-2 win over the Reds. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons fielded Chris Heisey's grounder and threw slightly wide of first base, forcing Freeman to catch the ball in Heisey's path. Heisey hit Freeman's glove and was out.

"I guess my thumb was in the wrong place," Freeman said. "It's just one of those freak injuries I seem to run into every year."

Freeman remained in the game and is wearing a soft splint on his hand on Sunday. He said there is "a little bit of tiny swelling" in the thumb.

"I can still bend it and do everything," Freeman said. "It's not too bad, so I'm just going to take a day off and see how it goes."

Freeman made the All-Star roster on the fan vote. He said he didn't know if he would be able to play in the game.

"Obviously, I hope to play but we'll see how it goes," Freeman said. "I've got to look out for the best interests of this team, so I've got to be available to play in the second half. If I can't play in the All-Star game, we're better off if I'm able to play in the second half."

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Freeman could receive treatment for the injury while in New York for the All-Star game.

"I think he needs to go," Gonzalez said. "If he can participate, participate. Hell, yeah! You never know when that chance will come again."

Evan Gattis, who had been out since June 18 with a right oblique strain, was activated from the 15-day disabled list and is starting at first base.

Gattis came off the DL after playing only two games in his injury rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Gwinnett. The original plan had been for Gattis to remain with Gwinnett through Sunday.

"It was good," Gattis said of his rehab stint. "I felt good to square up the ball last night. That tells me I'm ready."

Gattis, whose primary position is catcher, has started 11 games in left field and only three games at first base.

B.J. Upton, who left Friday night's game with a right adductor muscle strain, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday.

"We've got a break coming up and I just need a little more time to get healthy," Upton said, adding his recovery "is not a thing that's going to happen immediately."

Justin Upton also left Friday night's game with what was announced as a left calf strain. On Sunday, Gonzalez said team doctors have concluded the injury was just a severe cramp.

Gonzalez said Justin Upton would be available in an emergency situation on Sunday.

The Braves expect a third injured starting outfielder, Jason Heyward, to recover from his strained right hamstring without being placed on the disabled list.

The Braves' patchwork outfield of Jose Constanza, Reed Johnson and rookie Joey Terdoslavich combined for seven hits Saturday night and is starting again Sunday.
